The Clementine Jacket in Indigo Blue from Skall Studio, a short tailored denim jacket with a neat shape and a cropped length, two patch pockets flanking a run of four brown button fastenings, long sleeves with buttoned cuffs, a round neckline and a deep indigo wash, listed at 290 GBP with three of four sizes in stock and the medium closed. It is worth beginning with what this page counts, because it is the first garment in this run to count anything that is not a measurement. Two patch pockets. A run of four button fastenings. Those are numbers, and they are the only two non-measurement numbers on the page, and it is worth saying what they are worth: a factory reading this can cost the buttons and place the pockets without asking a single question. It is worth then turning to the three measurements, because the counting stops there. The pit to pit runs 47, 49, 51 and 53 centimetres, the sleeve length 61, 62, 63 and 65, and the total length 50, 50, 52 and 54. The chest grades two centimetres at every step, which is the closest to right this run has met. The sleeve grades one, one, and then two, so it back-loads. And the length does something this run has met before but never at the first step: it does not move at all between a 34 and a 36, and then it runs at two. It is worth then working out what the chest figures mean, because that is where this garment becomes difficult, and it is difficult in a way no other garment in this run has been. Doubled, the jacket runs 94 to 106 centimetres around, or 37 to 41 and three quarter inches. Against bodies of 31 to 37 inches, the ease at the chest runs 6.0 inches at a 34 down to 4.7 at a 40. It is worth pausing there, because of what this garment is. A jacket is the one category in which ease is not a styling choice, because a jacket is worn over something. Every shirt this run has measured carried more ease than this at its largest end: the striped viscose shirt nine inches, the checked shirt nineteen and a half. The jumper, which is not even meant to go over anything, carried thirteen and a quarter. This jacket carries four and three quarter. And the description's own words are that the cropped length makes it ideal for layering. It is worth putting those two sentences next to each other and leaving them there. The reference is the Clementine Jacket. Dongguan Bafinasa Garments Co., Ltd. develops comparable jackets on OEM and ODM terms, from cloth and wash development to retail or FBA ready packing. The pit to pit figures are flat half measures taken with the jacket laid down, doubling to 94, 98, 102 and 106 cm around, or 37.01 to 41.73 in. Against bodies of roughly 31 to 37 in, the ease at the chest runs from about 6.0 in at a 34 down to 4.7 at a 40, a fall of about 1.3 in across three steps. That fall is small because the chest grade of 2 cm is close to the 2.54 cm a size step needs, and it is the same 0.43 in per size this run has derived for every garment that grades at 2 cm. The sleeve grades 1, 1 and 2 cm, so it back-loads, and the total length is published as 50 cm on both a 34 and a 36 before running at 2 cm, a freeze at the first step. No waist, no hip, no shoulder and no neck are published, and the sleeve carries no measurement point. Our proposal below grades all three evenly, publishes the waist and the hip, and holds the ease steady from end to end.

Occasions and Styling
Suits everyday wear, weekends and the transitional months. A short tailored denim jacket in a deep indigo works over a fine knit or a tee and reads as a neat top layer rather than a heavy one, and its cropped length keeps it from shortening the leg line.
Production and Quality Control
The reference publishes three measurements for all four sizes, grades its chest evenly at two centimetres, publishes a size conversion from a numeric Danish scale to letter sizes, counts its pockets and its buttons in prose, names its neck, its sleeves and its cuff finish, states its care with a temperature and a drying instruction and names its country of manufacture, and carries four photographs. It gives no cloth weight, no waist, no hip, no shoulder, no neck width, no measurement point for the sleeve, no pocket width or depth, no button size or spacing, no collar or placket measurement, no shrinkage figure, no colourfastness, no wash standard, no fit word, no fit statement and no model, its total length freezes at the first step, its organic claim sits on the style number rather than the fibre panel, and the medium is out of stock. Three things follow: the least ease this run has measured on anything intended to be worn over clothing, a fit advice gap that runs the opposite way to the rest of the brand, and a length column that does not move at its first step.
Four and three quarter inches, and that is the first thing, and it is worth saying what it is a measurement of before saying what it means. The jacket runs ninety four to one hundred and six centimetres around the chest, which is thirty seven to forty one and three quarter inches, and the bodies it serves run thirty one to thirty seven. So the ease runs six inches at a thirty four down to four and three quarter at a forty. It is worth then setting that beside everything else this run has measured, because the comparison is what makes it a finding rather than a number. The shirts run nine, eleven and a half and nineteen and a half at their largest sizes. The jumper, which by its nature goes over almost nothing, runs thirteen and a quarter at its largest. This jacket runs four and three quarter. It is worth then adding the one fact that turns this from a comparison into a contradiction, and it is the brand's own sentence: the cropped length, it says, makes it ideal for layering. Four and three quarter inches of chest ease is about twelve centimetres in total, which is roughly what a shirt needs to sit on a body without pulling. There is nothing left for a second layer. It is worth then noting what is missing from the page precisely where it is needed, because this is where the batch's pattern lands hardest. This run has now read four garments from this brand. Two of them are loose: a jumper at seventeen inches of ease and a shirt at twenty one. Both carry a fit statement telling the customer to size down. This is the tightest garment the brand has produced in this run, and it carries no fit word, no fit statement and no model at all. So the advice is written on the garments that are too big and withheld from the one that is close, which is exactly backwards: the customer who needs to be told how a garment runs is the one buying the close-fitting jacket, and she is the only one who is given nothing.
Fifty, fifty, and that is the second thing, and it is worth being careful here, because this run has a rule for a column that does not move and the rule has to be applied honestly. The rule is this: if a page prints fractions anywhere, then an integer is an integer and a repeat is real; if it prints none, a repeat cannot be separated from a rounded-away half. This page prints none. Forty seven, forty nine, fifty one, fifty three; sixty one, sixty two, sixty three, sixty five; fifty, fifty, fifty two, fifty four. Every figure is a whole centimetre. So by this run's own convention, the freeze between a thirty four and a thirty six cannot be called real, and it will not be. It is worth then saying what can be said, which is quite a lot. Whether the freeze is real or not, the total length grows four centimetres across four sizes. A garment graded evenly at two would grow six. So two centimetres of length are missing from this range, and on this chart they are missing entirely from the smallest two sizes. It is worth then setting the length against the sleeve, because together they describe the shape of the range. The sleeve grades one, one, two. The length grades zero, two, two. Both grow four centimetres in total, and both put that growth at the large end. So between a thirty four and a thirty six the jacket gets four centimetres bigger around the chest, one centimetre longer in the sleeve, and not longer at all in the body, and the proportions change at that step and nowhere else. It is worth then closing on the two things the page says and does not measure, because they are the same shape as each other. The wash is deep indigo, and indigo is the single most notorious dye in clothing for rubbing off onto what is underneath it, and the page gives no colourfastness to rubbing, no crocking rating and no wash standard. And the fibre panel reads one hundred per cent cotton, while the style number next to it carries a GOTS mark. Every other garment from this brand in this run writes organic cotton on the fibre panel and a GOTS mark on the style, together. Here only one of the two says it, and there is no way for a buyer to know which is right.
Optional upgrades include grading the total length evenly at 2 cm per size so no size is left behind at the small end, grading the sleeve to match, publishing the waist, the hip, the shoulder and the neck width, naming the measurement point for the sleeve and giving the cuff depth, giving the pocket width, depth and placement and the button size and spacing, quoting the cloth weight in grams per square metre, adding colourfastness to rubbing and washing and a shrinkage figure, resolving the organic claim so the fibre panel and the style number agree, adding a fit statement and a model reference, organic cotton denim, cotton and lyocell, stretch denim with the elastane stated, rigid selvedge and cotton twill, lighter washes, raw indigo, black overdye and garment dyeing, relaxed, oversized and cropped boxy blocks, single chest, welt and flap pockets, five button, zip, tonal and metal shank fronts, single button, plain and tab cuffs, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.
Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
