Music Artist Graphic Hoodie: Rights First, Then The Print

Artist merchandise is a licensing question before it is a garment, and it is worth saying at the start because it is the thing that stops shipments. An artist's name, likeness and logos are protected, and producing merchandise without a licence is infringement, with the practical risk of seizure rather than a remake. We ask for the paperwork before we sample.

Where the rights are in place, the hoodie has to be worth the name on it. Merch is worn by people who care about the artist, it gets washed more than most clothing, and it is compared against other merch. That means the print has to survive, the placement has to be right at every size, and the garment underneath has to be consistent between runs if it sells in drops.

A note on this one: This title names a recording artist. We will not produce artist merchandise without documented proof of rights or written authorisation from the rights holder. The garment notes below assume that documentation is in place.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The licence is the first and there is no way round it. Artist names and likenesses are protected, and producing merch without paperwork risks seizure and a claim against both of us. Where it cannot be shown, the honest alternative is the same hoodie with your own artwork, which we can develop and which leaves you in a stronger position.

The print is the second and it is what the customer is buying. Merch gets washed more than most clothing, and large graphics on fleece crack when the ink sits on a fabric that moves rather than moving with it. We choose the method for the cloth rather than for cost, control the cure for the weight, and test wash fastness and stretch on printed samples rather than judging by eye, and we approve colours against the artist's reference rather than a screen.

Placement, consistency and the garment are the third. A fixed placement from the neck puts the graphic in a different place on every size, so we scale it by size and check on the body. Merch often sells in drops, so shade, hand and weight have to hold between runs and we keep references from the approved run. On the garment, the hood has to be balanced and the rib has to recover, because merch is worn hard and a hoodie that stops looking new reflects on the artist as much as on the maker.
