Long Wool Check Coat with a Straight Cut, a Classic Collar, Welt Pockets, a Button Down Front and a Full Lining

The Long Check Coat from The Tiny Big Sister, a wool blend in a green and navy check with a straight cut, a classic collar, welt pockets, a button down front and a full lining, listed at 315 GBP with all five sizes in stock. It is worth beginning with the length, because the garment is called long and the chart says something about that. The total length reads 120 centimetres, and then 120, and 120, and 120, and 120. It is worth then stating what that is, which is that the one measurement this coat is named for does not move across any of its five sizes. It is worth then saying why that matters more here than on most garments, which is that a long coat is a coat whose length is the point of it. It is worth then working out what it does on the body, which follows simply: bodies get taller as sizes go up, and a coat that stays the same length therefore ends lower on the small sizes and higher on the large. It is worth then putting this coat beside the other one, because that is what makes the batch worth writing, and the comparison is not available anywhere else. The same house sells another coat, at the same price, in the same sizes, under the next style number, and it is also called long. That one grades its length by a centimetre at every size. It is worth then stating what the two together prove, which is that freezing the length is not a necessity of coatmaking. One house made two coats, and froze a different column on each. It is worth then turning to the ease, because this run measures it on every garment and it tells the same story here. Doubled, the chest runs about 41 and three quarters to 44 and seven eighths inches, and against bodies of 31 to 39 inches the ease runs 10.73, 9.52, 8.31, 7.09 and 5.88. It is worth then holding the description's claim against it, which is that the straight cut flatters without constricting. It is worth then saying how well that holds across the range, which is that the largest size gets 5.88 inches and the smallest gets 10.73, so the claim is nearly twice as true at one end as the other. The reference is the Long Check Coat. Dongguan Bafinasa Garments Co., Ltd. develops comparable outerwear on OEM and ODM terms, from cloth and trim development to retail or FBA ready packing. The pit to pit figures are flat half measures taken with the coat laid down, doubling to 106, 108, 110, 112 and 114 cm around, or 41.73 to 44.88 in. Against bodies of roughly 31 to 39 in, the ease at the chest runs 10.7, 9.5, 8.3, 7.1 and 5.9 in, falling by about 1.21 in at every step, and this run derives that a grade of g centimetres flat moves the ease by 0.79g minus 2 inches per size, which matches the chart on all four steps. The total length is 120 cm on every one of the five sizes, so the hem falls at a different height on every body the coat is offered to. The sleeve grades 1 cm per size against a body growing two inches per size, so the arm outgrows the sleeve. No waist, no hip and no shoulder are published, and no measurement point is given for the sleeve. Our proposal below grades the length and the sleeve and holds the ease steady.

Occasions and Styling

Suits winter and office wear. A long checked coat in a wool blend works over tailoring or knitwear, and the straight cut layers without bulk.

Production and Quality Control

The reference publishes three measurements for all five sizes, grades the chest and the sleeve evenly, publishes a size conversion from its numeric scale to letter sizes, carries all five sizes in stock, declares its lining fibre on a second composition line, gives a care instruction appropriate to its fibre, names its cut, collar, pockets, closure and lining, and names its country of manufacture. It gives no micron, no cloth weight, no check size, sett or repeat, no waist, no hip, no shoulder, no measurement point for the sleeve, no collar depth, no pocket count, no button count, no front and back length, no shrinkage figure, no certification and no model, its total length does not move across any of its five sizes, and no bullet states the colour. Two things follow: a coat named for its length with a length that does not grade, and a check with no check size.

One hundred and twenty, five times, and that is the first thing, and it is worth saying what kind of garment this is before saying what the number does, because the two are related. The coat is called the Long Check Coat. Its length is the thing it is named for, and the chart gives that length as 120 centimetres on every one of its five sizes. It is worth then working out what a fixed length does on bodies that are not fixed, which is simple: bodies get taller as sizes go up, so a coat of constant length ends lower down the body on the small sizes and higher up on the large. It is worth then saying why this is worse on a coat than on most garments, which is that a long coat's length is its entire purpose, and the hem is not aimed at a landmark that would let a customer work it out. It is worth then turning to the comparison, because this run has never had one like it and it is the reason this batch is worth reading. The same house sells another coat at the same price, in the same five sizes, under the style number immediately before this one, and it is also called Long. It is worth then saying what that one does with its length, which is grade it: 117, 118, 119, 120, 121. It is worth then stating what the two together settle, and this is the finding: one house made two long coats and froze the length on one and graded it on the other, so freezing it cannot be a necessity of coatmaking. It is worth then noting where the two agree, which sharpens it further. A size 40 in the other coat measures 120 cm, which is exactly what every size of this one measures. So the two coats meet at one point and disagree at every other. It is worth then holding the description against the numbers, because it makes a claim. It says the straight cut flatters without constricting. It is worth then giving the ease, which runs 10.73 inches at a 34 down to 5.88 at a 42. It is worth then stating how well the claim holds, which is that it is nearly twice as true on the smallest size as on the largest, and the cause is the chest grading one centimetre per size while the body grows two inches.

A timeless green and navy check, and that is the second thing, and it is worth saying what a check is before naming what is missing, because this run has met patterned cloth before and the same gap keeps appearing. A check is measured. It has a sett, which is how many threads run in each block, and a repeat, which is how far the pattern travels before it starts again, and a size, which is usually given as the width of its largest square. It is worth then saying why that matters specifically on a long coat, which is that a large check on a long coat has to be matched across the front and balanced from one side to the other, and the check size is what tells a maker whether that is possible in the cloth width and how much extra has to be bought to do it. It is worth then looking for any of that on the page and finding none of it: no check size, no sett, no repeat. It is worth then setting that beside the patterned cloth this run has read in the last two batches, because it is now a habit rather than a slip: a diamond jacquard with no repeat and no motif size, a velvet burnout with no burnout ratio and no motif size, and now a check with no check size. It is worth then closing on the composition panel, which does one thing better than most and one thing worse. It is worth then giving the better first, which is that it declares the lining on its own line at 55 per cent polyester and 45 per cent viscose, and the bullets say fully lined, so the claim and the panel agree. It is worth then giving the worse, which is that the shell is 70 per cent wool and 30 per cent polyester and there is no micron and no weight at all. It is worth then saying what a coating is bought by, which is weight and fibre fineness before anything else, and this run has now read three wool coats across this batch and the last one and none of them gave either.

Optional upgrades include grading the total length across the size set so the hem holds its place on the body, grading the sleeve by more than 1 cm per size, publishing the check size, the sett and the repeat, publishing the cloth weight in grams per square metre and the micron, publishing the lining weight, the waist, the hip and the shoulder, the measurement point for the sleeve, the collar depth and width, the pocket count and size, the button count, size and spacing, the front and back length, adding a colour bullet, shrinkage figures and a model reference, 100% wool, wool cashmere and recycled wool coatings, plain, herringbone, windowpane and striped cloths, midi, knee and maxi lengths, half and sleeve linings and unlined bodies with bound seams, notch lapel, shawl and contrast collars, double breasted, concealed placket and wrap fronts, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.

Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
