The Billy Skirt from Rixo in black with a gold polka dot, a sparkly midi described as light, floaty and easy to wear, lined with a concealed zip fastening, listed at 275 GBP with all five sizes in stock. It is worth beginning with the waist, because it does something no other chart in this run has done. It runs 33, 37, 41, 43 and 45 centimetres, so the steps are four, four, two and two. The grade does not decline gradually and it does not stop: it halves, and it halves exactly at the middle of the range. The first two steps are twice the size of the last two. It is worth then looking at what that does to the ease, because the starting point is the problem rather than the grade. Doubling for the circumference gives about 26, 29.1, 32.3, 33.9 and 35.4 inches, and against bodies of roughly 26 to 34 inches the ease runs from about zero at a size 8, up to about 2.3 inches at a size 12, and back down to about 1.4 at a size 16. So the smallest size has no ease at all at the waistband, on a skirt with a concealed zip and no stretch fibre in it. It is worth then turning to the length, which is the most striking figure in this batch. It runs 102, 100, 100, 100 and 100. The size 8 is the longest skirt in the range. Every other size is two centimetres shorter, and four of the five share one figure. It is worth saying plainly why that is backwards. A size 8 body is on average shorter than a size 16 body, so if anything the smaller skirt should be the shorter one. Here the shortest wearer gets the most skirt, and the hem falls lowest on the person with the least height to spare. And there is no model on this page, so there is nothing to check the word midi against. The reference is the Billy Skirt. | 8 | 33 cm | 102 cm |
| 10 | 37 cm | 100 cm |

The waist figures are flat half measures taken with the skirt laid down, doubling to 66, 74, 82, 86 and 90 cm around, or 25.98 to 35.43 in. Against bodies of roughly 26 to 34 in, the ease runs from about 0 in at a size 8 up to about 2.3 in at a size 12 and back down to about 1.4 in at a size 16. The waist steps 4, 4, 2 and 2 cm, so the grade halves at the middle of the range. The total length is 102 cm at a size 8 and 100 cm on every other size, which makes the smallest size the longest skirt in the range. No hip and no hem circumference is published, and there is no model on the page, so the word midi cannot be checked against a height.

Occasions and Styling
Suits parties, occasions and evenings. A gold polka dot midi in a light floaty cloth works with a plain knit or a simple top and carries the outfit.
Production and Quality Control
The reference publishes two measurements for all five sizes, grades its waist at every step, names its pattern with a colour and a type, states that it is lined in the bullets and confirms it separately in the composition panel, gives a two part composition panel covering the outer cloth and the lining, names its closure, states its care, states the country of manufacture and names the style number, and carries all five sizes in stock. It gives no cloth weight, no hip, no hem circumference, no dot diameter, spacing or repeat, no zip location or length, no lining weight, no fit word of any kind, no size conversion, no model and no certification, and its total length is shorter on the smallest size than the word midi would suggest and identical on the other four. Three things follow: a grade that halves halfway through, a smallest size with no ease at all, and the smallest size being the longest skirt in the range.
Four, four, two, two, and that is the first thing, and it is worth saying what shape this is, because this run has collected a fair number of uneven grades and this is a new one. The run has met grades that decline steadily, stepping three, two, one and one. It has met grades that stop, stepping two, one, one and zero. It has met grades with one outsized first step, like the two knitwear pieces last batch at three, one, one and five, two, two. What it has not met is a grade that changes size cleanly and holds the new size. This one steps four, four, then two, two. It does not taper and it does not give out; it halves, and it halves exactly at the middle of the range, so the lower half of the sizes is graded at twice the rate of the upper half. It is worth then doing the arithmetic, because the relationship this run has been testing holds here too. Averaged over the five sizes the waist grows twelve centimetres over four steps, which is three centimetres a size, which is about two and a third inches around, and a UK size step needs about two inches. So the grade is too fast by about a third of an inch a step, and over four steps about one and a half inches of ease should be gained. Measured end to end it goes from about zero to about one point four, which is one and a half. It is worth then looking at where the ease actually sits, because the average conceals the problem. It runs about zero at a size 8, one point one at a 10, two point three at a 12, one point nine at a 14 and one point four at a 16. So it rises, peaks in the middle, and falls. It is worth being clear about what zero means at the smallest size, because this run has spent a long time working out when ease crossing zero matters and this is the clearest crossing yet. The waistband of a size 8 measures about twenty six inches around, and a size 8 body measures about twenty six. That is no ease at all. And the cloth is ninety five per cent viscose and five per cent metallised fibre, so there is no stretch in it, and the closure is a concealed zip rather than anything that gives. A skirt whose waistband is exactly the size of the body it is meant for will not sit comfortably and will not close easily. It is worth adding that the rest of the range is fine by comparison, so this is not a garment that runs small throughout; it is the base size that is cut short, and everything above it has room. It is worth noting finally that this run has now measured ease crossing zero on several garments and in both directions, and the shape is always the same: the fit fails at one end of the range, and which end it is depends on whether the base size was cut with room or without it.
One hundred and two, and that is the second thing, and it is worth stating it in the plainest terms available, because it is the most wrong single number in this batch. The total length is one hundred and two centimetres at a size 8, and one hundred centimetres at a size 10, a 12, a 14 and a 16. The smallest size is the longest skirt. It is worth being careful about what can and cannot be concluded, so let it be said plainly: two centimetres, on one size, out of five. The likely explanation is a stray figure, and this run has met that before, most recently a sleeve that ran backwards by four centimetres on three rows. But the page publishes one hundred and two, and there is nothing else on the page to check it against, and there is no model. It is worth then saying why the direction is wrong even if the number is a slip, because that part does not depend on which figure is correct. Four of the five sizes share one length. So whatever the size 8 should be, the skirt does not grade in length at all across the bulk of its range, and a size 10 and a size 16 get the same hundred centimetres. And the run has now recorded this on garment after garment: three of five frozen, two of three frozen, four of four frozen, and here four of five. It is worth then adding the specific wrongness of this one, which is new. On every other frozen length this run has found, the smaller sizes got the same length as the larger ones, which is already wrong because bodies differ in height. Here the smaller size gets more length than the larger ones. A size 8 body is on average shorter than a size 16 body, so the shorter wearer gets two centimetres more skirt, and the hem falls lower on her than it does on anyone else. It is worth then taking the length word, because this is where the missing model hurts. The bullets say midi length. This run has now recorded that word at one hundred and thirty six centimetres on one dress, at one hundred and thirty to one hundred and thirty three on another, at one hundred and thirty six to one hundred and forty on a third, and now at one hundred. So the same word covers a span of forty centimetres, which is about forty per cent of the range it describes. On the dresses, at least, there was a model height to set the word against, and on two of them the run was able to show that the word and the number disagreed. Here there is no model, so the word cannot be checked at all. It is worth closing on what else the page withholds, and the hip is the main one. A skirt needs a waist and a hip, and this run has now read three bottoms in one batch and none of the three measures a hip.
Ninety five and five, and that is the third thing, and it is worth saying what that split does to the description. The composition panel reads outer ninety five per cent viscose and five per cent metallised fibre, with a separate line for a one hundred per cent polyester lining. The description's whole premise is the sparkle: a black sparkly midi, party dressing at its best, gold polka dot. And the sparkle is five per cent of the cloth. It is worth noting that this is the only place on the page that quantifies it at all, and it does so precisely, which the run should credit, because five per cent is an honest number for a metallic content. It is worth then making the connection the page does not make, which is the care label. The label says dry clean only, and metallised fibre is the reason: metallic coatings degrade in washing, and a garment with metal in the cloth generally cannot be machine washed. That connection is nowhere drawn, so the label looks like an arbitrary restriction rather than a consequence of the cloth. It is worth then setting the two part panel beside the rest of this run, because this is now three in three batches: a dress with a lace line, a skirt with a pocket lining line, and this one with a lining line. It is a genuine improvement on a single blended figure, and it is becoming common. It is worth then turning to the dots, because a polka dot is the pattern where dimensions matter most. The bullets say gold polka dot, so the colour is given and the type is given, and there is no dot diameter, no spacing and no repeat. A five millimetre dot and a twenty millimetre dot are entirely different garments, and the spacing between them changes the whole look, and neither is stated. It is worth adding this to the tally: this run has now met ten patterns named on a page and not one of them has carried a size, a spacing or a repeat. It is worth finally setting this page beside the other skirt in this batch, because the comparison is uncomfortable and worth making. That one costs eighty five pounds and carries seven bullets, a named cloth, a named wash, a closure described in two parts, pockets given by location and reinforcement, a durability claim and a wash temperature with a number on it. This one costs two hundred and seventy five pounds and carries four bullets, no cloth name, no weight, and one photograph. And its description is four sentences about how the skirt makes the wearer feel, with no fact in any of them. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.
Optional upgrades include grading the waist evenly and correcting the base size so the smallest is not cut at zero ease, grading the length across all five sizes and grading it upward rather than downward, publishing the hip and the hem circumference, quoting the cloth weight in grams per square metre, giving the dot diameter, the spacing and the repeat, naming the zip location and length, adding an opacity statement for the lined body, silk and metallic, polyester and metallic, plain viscose with a foil print, lurex and sequined cloths, smaller, larger, placed and engineered dots and plain dyeing, viscose, cupro, cotton lawn and half linings and no lining, shorter midi, maxi and knee lengths, elasticated back, drawstring and side tie waists, side zip, exposed zip and button placket, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.
Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
