Short Sleeve Off Shoulder Sweatshirt: An Open Neck With Nothing To Hold It

Taking the sleeves off an off the shoulder top makes it harder rather than easier, and it is worth explaining why. On a long sleeved version the sleeve and the shoulder help hold the neckline where it is. Remove them and the neckline is held only by the neck elastic, with a short body hanging from it and nothing else contributing. That is the hardest version of this neckline to keep in place.

It is also the version most worth getting right, because a short sleeved off the shoulder sweatshirt is a summer garment and it gets worn for hours in hot weather. Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

Staying in place is the first and it is harder here than on any other version of this neckline. With no sleeves to help, the neck is doing all the work, and if the balance or the tension is wrong the neckline rides back onto the shoulder as soon as the wearer moves. We set the neck as measurements, specify the elastic or band, and test the garment moving with arms raised rather than standing still, which is the only way to see it.

Comfort at the neck is the second and it pulls the other way. Elastic tight enough to hold will dig and leave a mark, and on an open neckline in warm weather that matters more, not less. We set the tension deliberately, test it on the body rather than a form, and check it after washing, because elastic behaves differently once it has been through a cycle.

Weight, shrinkage and the sleeve are the third. Too heavy and it overheats, too light and there is not enough weight to help the neck sit, so the range is a compromise we test rather than guess. Shrinkage tightens a neckline and can turn a comfortable opening into a tight one, so we test before cutting and compensate. The sleeve opening on a short sleeve is very visible and it has to be even, so we check it as a pair rather than individually.
