The L/S Philipa T-Shirt from Carhartt WIP in white, in a midweight stretch cotton with a fine rib, a tailored slim fit, a traditional crewneck, long sleeves and a tonal embroidered C logo on the chest, listed at 40 GBP with one of its four sizes in stock. It is worth beginning with the chest, because it does something this run has not seen before. The pit to pit reads 37, 38, 42 and 43 centimetres. It is worth then naming the grades, which are one, then four, then one. It is worth then looking at the shape of that, because it is not a wobble. It is worth then saying what it looks like, which is two pairs. Thirty seven to thirty eight is one centimetre. Forty two to forty three is one centimetre. And between the pairs is a gap of four. It is worth then stating what that suggests, which is a chart drawn from two size blocks, or two measuring sessions, with the middle never reconciled. It is worth then working out what it does to the wearer. Doubled, the chest runs about twenty nine to thirty four inches, and against bodies of thirty one to thirty seven inches the garment measures under the body on every size. It is worth then asking whether that is a fault, because this run asked the same question one batch ago and answered it the other way. It is worth then reaching back for that garment, which was a cotton jersey tee measuring up to four tenths of an inch smaller than the body, and this run said there was no mechanism for it: no elastane, no smocking, no stretch. It is worth then reading this composition panel, which is ninety eight per cent cotton and two per cent elastane, in a fine rib, with the word slim on it. It is worth then stating the difference in one line: the same numbers mean opposite things, and the difference is one line of fibre. It is worth then closing on the zig zag, because it is the consequence a customer would feel. The ease runs about minus 1.9, then minus 3.1, then minus 1.9, then minus 3.1. It is worth then saying what that is, which is that a size up is sometimes tighter and sometimes looser. The reference is the L/S Philipa T-Shirt. The pit to pit figures are flat half measures taken with the tee laid down, doubling to 74, 76, 84 and 86 cm around, or 29.13 to 33.86 in. Against bodies of roughly 31 to 37 in, the garment measures under the body on every size, by about 1.9 in on the XS and the M and about 3.1 in on the S and the L. That is the design here and not a fault, because the cloth is a stretch rib at 98 per cent cotton and 2 per cent elastane and the fit word is slim, so the garment is meant to be under tension. This run derives that a grade of g centimetres flat moves the ease by 0.79g minus 2 inches per size, which matches the chart on all three steps including the four centimetre one. The chest grades 1, 4 and 1 cm, so the chart reads as two close pairs with a gap between them, and the ease zig zags as a result. No waist, no hip and no shoulder are published, and no measurement point is given for the sleeve. Our proposal below grades the chest evenly so the ease holds at one figure.

Occasions and Styling
Suits everyday and layering. A fine rib long sleeve tee with a slim body works under a shirt or a knit, and the stretch keeps it close without binding.
Production and Quality Control
The reference publishes three measurements for all four sizes, grades the sleeve evenly, states its fibre with the elastane share given, gives a care label with a figure for the temperature, a cycle and a drying instruction, names its rib, neck, sleeves and logo, and names its country of manufacture. It gives no cloth weight despite the word midweight, no stretch percentage, no rib depth or width, no waist, no hip, no shoulder, no measurement point for the sleeve, no neck width, no logo size, no front and back length, no shrinkage figure, no style number, no certification and no model, and its chest grades 1, 4 and 1 cm so the ease zig zags. Two things follow: a chart that reads as two pairs of sizes with the middle never reconciled, and the same negative ease this run faulted one batch ago, here carrying the mechanism that was missing then.
One, four, one, and that is the first thing, and it is worth writing the figures out before saying anything about them, because the shape is the finding. The pit to pit reads 37, 38, 42 and 43 centimetres. It is worth then naming the steps, which are one, then four, then one. It is worth then looking at how those numbers group, because that is what makes this more than a wobble. Thirty seven to thirty eight is one centimetre. Forty two to forty three is one centimetre. And between the two pairs sits a gap of four. It is worth then saying what that looks like, which is two size blocks, or two measuring sessions, joined in the middle without the join ever being checked. It is worth then working out what it does to the ease, because that is where a customer meets it. Doubled, the chest runs 29.13 to 33.86 in, and against bodies of 31 to 37 in the garment sits under the body on all four sizes: about 1.9 in on the XS and the M, and about 3.1 in on the S and the L. It is worth then stating the consequence plainly, which is that the ease zig zags. A customer going from an S to an M gets looser. A customer going from an M to an L gets tighter. It is worth then noting what this run's formula does with the four centimetre step, because it is a hard test: a grade of g centimetres flat moves the ease by 0.79g minus 2 inches per size, so four centimetres should add 1.16, and minus 3.08 plus 1.16 is minus 1.92, against minus 1.93. It is worth then saying how many garments that formula has now matched, which is every one this run has read.
Two per cent, and that is the second thing, and it is a small number doing a large amount of work, and it is worth saying why before anything else. It is worth then reaching back one batch, because this run has to be consistent with itself. One batch ago it read a cotton jersey tee whose largest size measured four tenths of an inch smaller than the body, and it said plainly that there was no mechanism for it: no elastane, no smocking, no stretch, nothing to make being under the body the design. It is worth then reading this composition panel, which is ninety eight per cent cotton and two per cent elastane, in a fine rib, carrying the word slim. It is worth then stating the difference, which is the whole point: the same negative ease means opposite things on the two garments, and what separates them is one line of fibre. It is worth then saying what a slim fit in a stretch rib is supposed to do, which is sit under the body and be held there by tension, so a negative figure is the design working. It is worth then giving the credit and moving on, because the garment earns it here. It is worth then turning to the two things it does not earn. It is worth then taking the first, which is that the description says midweight and no weight in grams per square metre appears anywhere. It is worth then saying how many times this run has now met that, because it has stopped being a slip: a jumper called thick, a tee called lightweight, a denim called weightless, and now a rib called midweight, and not one of them gave a number. It is worth then taking the second, which is subtler. The bullets say stretch-cotton, and the panel gives two per cent elastane. It is worth then saying what that is and is not, which is that a fibre share is not a stretch figure: two per cent elastane tells you how much of the yarn is elastane, and not how far the cloth stretches or how well it comes back. It is worth then closing on what is actually available, because it sharpens the grading fault. The only size in stock is the L, and the L is one of the two sizes carrying the larger negative ease, at minus 3.14.
Optional upgrades include grading the chest evenly so the ease holds at one figure instead of zig zagging, publishing the weight in grams per square metre so the word midweight can be checked, publishing the stretch percentage and the recovery so the word stretch can be checked, giving the rib depth and width, the measurement point for the sleeve, the neck width, the waist, the hip and the shoulder, the front and back length, the logo size and placement, adding an iron and a bleach instruction and a drying instruction beyond do not tumble dry, shrinkage figures, a style number and a model reference, fine and wide ribs, plain jersey bodies with ribbed cuffs, organic cotton ribs, close and regular fits with positive ease, wide crew, scoop and mock necks, three quarter and short sleeves, contrast embroidery, woven labels and printed motifs, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.
Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
