Brushed Angora Blend Knit with a Deep Ribbed Hem and Cuffs, Dropped Shoulders and a Crew Neckline in Burgundy

The Dateko knit from Bellerose in Cordovan, a deep burgundy knit in a soft brushed angora blend with a relaxed silhouette, a deep ribbed hem and cuffs, a slightly raised crew neckline and dropped shoulders, listed at 185 GBP with all five sizes in stock. It is worth beginning with the chest, because this run has read a great many charts and this is the first one whose ease rises and then falls. The pit to pit runs 46, 51, 56, 57 and 58 centimetres. Those are flat half measures, so the knit runs 92 to 116 centimetres around, or 36 to 45 and three quarter inches. Against bodies of 31 to 39 inches, the ease runs 5.2 inches at an XS, 7.2 at a small, 9.1 at a medium, 7.9 at a large and 6.7 at an XL. That is the whole finding in one line: the ease climbs for two sizes, peaks in the middle of the range, and then gives back nearly two and a half inches. Every other garment this run has measured has either declined at a steady rate or held level. This one turns over. It is worth then looking at why, because the reason is visible in the grade. The pit to pit steps 5, 5, 1 and 1 centimetres. Half the garment's total chest growth happens in the first two sizes and the last two sizes share four centimetres between them. The sleeve and the total length, on the same chart, step a perfectly even centimetre at a time. So this page can grade evenly, and it does so twice, and the one column it does not grade evenly is the one its own description is built on: generous room through the chest. It is worth then reading the two fit words the page uses, because they now have a scale to be tested against. This run has anchored relaxed at about eleven and a half inches of ease and slim at about three to four and a half. The Dateko reaches nine point one at its peak and never gets near relaxed, and at an XS it sits at five point two, which is nearer slim than it is to the word on the page. The second bullet says relaxed fit with extra room through the chest, and the last one says fits true to size. It is worth then saying what true to size would require here, because it is the clearest way to state the problem. A garment that runs true to size should give a wearer roughly the same amount of room whichever size she takes. This one gives her five point two inches at an XS and nine point one at a medium, which is a difference of nearly four inches between two neighbouring sizes. It is worth closing on where the chest stops growing, because that is who this affects. From a medium upward the chest steps one centimetre at a time while the body keeps stepping two inches at a time, so the ease falls by about one and a fifth inches per size. The person for whom relaxed fails hardest is the largest one, and the description promises her extra room through the chest without qualification. The reference is the Dateko knit. The pit to pit figures are flat half measures taken with the knit laid down, doubling to 92, 102, 112, 114 and 116 cm around, or 36.22 to 45.67 in. Against bodies of roughly 31 to 39 in, the ease at the chest runs 5.2, 7.2, 9.1, 7.9 and 6.7 in. The chest steps 5, 5, 1 and 1 cm, so the ease rises by about 1.94 in on each of the first two steps and falls by about 1.21 in on each of the last two. This run has derived that a grade of g centimetres flat changes the ease by 0.79g minus 2 inches per size, which gives plus 1.94 for a 5 cm step and minus 1.21 for a 1 cm step, and this chart matches that on all four steps. The sleeve and the total length both step exactly 1 cm throughout, so the same chart holds the length dimensions steady and lets the chest swing. No waist and no hip are published, and the sleeve carries no measurement point. Our proposal below grades all three columns evenly and holds the ease steady from end to end.

Occasions and Styling

Suits everyday winter wear and weekends. A brushed angora blend knit with a relaxed body works over a shirt or a tee, and the deep ribbed hem lets it sit on the hip without bunching.

Production and Quality Control

The reference publishes three measurements for all five sizes, carries all five sizes in stock, names its neckline, its shoulder construction, its rib finish and its handle, gives a two-fibre composition panel, states its care in four clauses including how to dry it, and names its country of manufacture. It gives no yarn count, no gauge, no ply, no cloth weight, no waist, no hip, no shoulder width, no shoulder drop, no rib depth, no neck width, no measurement point for the sleeve, no pilling grade, no fibre shed rating, no shrinkage figure, no size and fit statement, no model and no certification of any kind, and its chest grading is the most uneven this run has met. Three things follow: the first ease in this run that rises and then falls, a fit word that is not true at any of the five sizes, and a garment whose whole description rests on the one measurement that stops growing.

Five, five, one, one, and that is the first thing, and it is worth saying what that shape does before saying where it comes from. The chest grows twelve centimetres flat across four sizes. That is more than the ten and a sixth a range of this span needs, so in total this knit over-grades, which is unusual and mostly to its credit. What it does with those twelve centimetres is the problem. Ten of them arrive in the first two sizes and the last two sizes share four. It is worth then converting that into what a wearer actually gets, because this is where the shape turns into a fit. At an XS the ease is five point two inches. At a small, seven point two. At a medium, nine point one. At a large, seven point nine. At an XL, six point seven. So the ease climbs by nearly four inches and then gives back two and a half, and this is the first garment in this run whose ease is not monotonic. Every other chart this run has read has declined at a steady rate or held level, and this one turns over in the middle. It is worth then holding the two fit words against that, because this run now has a scale to hold them against. Relaxed sits at about eleven and a half inches and slim at about three to four and a half. This knit peaks at nine point one, so it never reaches relaxed at any size, and at an XS it sits at five point two, which is nearer slim than it is to the word printed above it. The second claim is fits true to size, and this run has now met that claim on three garments from two brands and it has not survived cleanly on any of them, and the reason is visible here: a garment that runs true to size gives a wearer about the same room whichever size she takes, and this one gives five point two at one end of the range and nine point one in the middle. It is worth then closing on the direction the chart takes after the peak, because that is who it hurts. From a medium upward the chest steps one centimetre at a time while the body keeps stepping two inches at a time, so the ease falls by about one and a fifth inches at every size, and by the XL it is back below where a small started. The description promises extra room through the chest, and the size the promise fails hardest for is the largest one. It is worth adding one thing in the page's favour, which is that the arithmetic is at least self-consistent: this run derives that a grade of g centimetres flat moves the ease by 0.79g minus 2 inches per size, and this chart matches that figure on all four of its steps, plus one point nine four twice and minus one point two one twice.

Dropped shoulders, and that is the second thing, and it is worth saying why those two words matter more here than they look. A dropped shoulder moves the point a sleeve hangs from off the body's own shoulder and down the arm. So the sleeve length published beside it is measuring from somewhere that is no longer on the body, and it cannot be compared with the sleeve of a set-in sleeve garment, or with the wearer's arm, unless the page says where it was measured from. This page does not. It gives no measurement point, no shoulder width and no shoulder drop. It is worth then noting that this is the third knit from this brand in this run with a dropped or a slanted shoulder, and not one of the three publishes a shoulder measurement, so the construction this house favours is precisely the one that makes its own sleeve figures unreadable. It is worth then running down the rest of the page's unmeasured adjectives, because the list is longer than on most. A deep ribbed hem and cuffs, with no rib depth. A slightly raised neckline, with no neck width and no neck drop. A soft, brushed, fuzzy texture, with no brushing specification. The knit is sixty five per cent angora, which is rabbit hair, and there is no fibre certification and no animal welfare certification named on it, which is worth stating plainly because angora is the fibre whose production has drawn the most sustained welfare scrutiny of any in knitwear. It is worth then putting the care label in context, because it is the one place this page does better than most. Four clauses: handwash in cold water only, do not iron, dry flat. This run has now read five garments in animal fibre, and this is the only one of the five that says how to dry it, and dry flat is the instruction that stops a wet knit stretching out of shape. It is a pity that the other four say hand wash and stop. It is worth then noting the small thing that closes the batch, which is that the same knit in dusty olive is given six photographs and this one five, for a garment that is otherwise identical in every measurable respect.

Optional upgrades include grading the chest evenly so the ease does not peak in the middle and fall away, grading the sleeve and the length at rates that match real height growth rather than a flat centimetre, publishing the waist and the hip, naming the measurement point for the sleeve and giving the shoulder width and the shoulder drop, giving the rib depth, the neck width and the neck drop, quoting the yarn count, the gauge in needles per inch, the ply and the cloth weight in grams per square metre, adding a pilling grade, a fibre shed rating and shrinkage figures, responsible angora certified, wool, mohair, alpaca, cashmere and brushed acrylic yarns, finer, chunkier and two ply constructions, unbrushed and washed finishes, set-in shoulders, raglan sleeves and slanted shoulders, shallower ribs, plain and split hems, regular, oversized and boxy fits, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.

Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
