The Edie cardigan from Skall Studio in dark grey, knitted in a cotton jersey pointelle with long sleeves, baby lock edges and mother of pearl buttons, listed at 75 GBP with only two of its four sizes in stock. It is worth beginning with something this run has not been able to say once in fifty seven batches, which is that a garment carries a certification. The bullets state it. The fibre panel states it again. The style line ends with it. This product is certified to the standard of GOTS, made from 100 per cent organic cotton jersey, GOTS certified, and the style number itself is followed by the word GOTS. It is the first garment in this run to name a standard, and it is worth noting how cheap that is to do. It is worth then reading the chart, because this is the first garment in this run to grade in fractions. The chest steps two centimetres at every step. The sleeve steps one. The total length steps half a centimetre: 54, 54.5, 55 and 55.5. Every other garment this run has read has graded in whole centimetres, and this one works in halves. It is worth then working out the fit, because that is where the interesting thing is. Doubled, the chest runs 80 to 92 centimetres around, or about 31 and a half to 36 and a quarter inches. Against bodies of 31 to 37 inches, the ease runs half an inch at an XS, seven hundredths at an S, minus 0.35 at an M and minus 0.78 at an L. It is worth then pausing on that shape, because this run has met a great many eases and this is a new one. The ease falls steadily and crosses zero in the middle of the range. So the smallest size is slightly loose, the largest is under tension, and the same fit word covers both. It is worth then holding the fit word against those numbers, and this is the second thing that is new. The bullets say slim fit cut serving a figure-hugging silhouette. This is the first garment in this run to use the word slim, and it holds: a garment measuring minus 0.78 inches at the chest is hugging the figure, and the word is doing its job. It is worth then closing on what the description asks this cardigan to do, because that is where the numbers stop supporting the words. The description says to wear it over a silk slip dress. At a size S this cardigan measures 33.07 inches around on a 33 inch body. That is within a tenth of an inch of the body itself, which means there is no room in it for anything at all, let alone a slip dress. The reference is the Edie cardigan. The pit to pit figures are flat half measures taken with the cardigan laid down, doubling to 80, 84, 88 and 92 cm around, or 31.50 to 36.22 in. Against bodies of roughly 31 to 37 in, the ease at the chest runs plus 0.5, plus 0.07, minus 0.35 and minus 0.78 in, so the fit crosses from slightly loose to under tension between S and M, and tightens by about 0.43 in at every step. The chest steps 2 cm, the sleeve 1 cm and the total length half a centimetre, so all three columns are perfectly even and the length is graded in fractions. No waist, no hip and no shoulder are published, and no stretch figure is given despite two sizes measuring under the body. Our proposal below holds the ease negative and even from end to end and adds the stretch figure.

Occasions and Styling
Suits everyday layering and evening wear. A fine pointelle cardigan works buttoned on its own or open over a dress, and the dark grey sits easily over print.
Production and Quality Control
The reference publishes three measurements for all four sizes, grades all three columns perfectly evenly and grades its length in half centimetres, names a certification and repeats it in three places, gives a complete model reference with the height and the size worn, states its cloth type, its construction, its edges, its buttons and its country of manufacture, and carries four photographs. It gives no cloth weight, no stretch figure, no waist, no hip, no shoulder, no button count, no stitch width, no measurement point for the sleeve and no drying instruction, only two of its four sizes are in stock, and its description carries a promotional offer rather than product information. Three things follow: the first certification this run has been able to record, a fit word that finally holds, and a layering recommendation the measurements cannot support.
Fifty seven batches, and that is the first thing, and it is worth saying what has not happened in them before it is said what has. Not one garment in this run has named a standard. Every specification table this run has written has carried the line certification, none named. This one names one, and it names it three times: in the bullets, in the fibre panel where it reads 100 per cent organic cotton jersey, GOTS certified, and in the style line, where the number is followed by the word GOTS. It is worth then noting how little that costs and how much it settles. It is worth then reading the chart, because this garment is also the first in this run to grade in fractions. The chest steps two centimetres, the sleeve one, and the total length half: 54, 54.5, 55, 55.5. Every other garment this run has read has worked in whole centimetres, and grading in halves is what lets a slim garment keep its proportions as it grows. It is worth then working out the fit, and this is the part that is new. Doubled, the chest runs 31.50, 33.07, 34.65 and 36.22 inches. Against bodies of 31 to 37, the ease runs plus half an inch, plus seven hundredths, minus 0.35 and minus 0.78. It is worth then naming the shape, because this run has read a great many eases and none has done this. The ease falls steadily, by the usual four tenths of an inch for a two centimetre grade, and it crosses zero in the middle of the range. So two sizes sit above the body and two sit below it. It is worth then holding the fit word against that, and this is the second new thing. The bullets say slim fit cut serving a figure-hugging silhouette. This run has tested relaxed four times and it held once. This is the first time any garment has said slim, and it holds: a garment measuring three quarters of an inch under the body at its largest is hugging the figure, and the word means what it says. It is worth then being fair about the mechanism, because it matters. This is a cotton jersey pointelle, and jersey stretches, so negative ease is wearable here in a way it would not be in a woven.
Over a silk slip dress, and that is the third thing, and it is worth putting the two statements side by side because they are on the same page and they do not agree. The description says this cardigan gives the perfect nineties vibe if you wear it over a silk slip dress. At a size S the chest measures 42 centimetres flat, which is 84 around, which is 33.07 inches, on a body of 33. That is seven hundredths of an inch. The model in the photograph is wearing a garment the same size as she is. It is worth then saying what that leaves for the layer, which is nothing. A cardigan cannot hold a slip dress and a body in 33.07 inches when the body alone is 33. It is worth then adding what is missing that would let a customer judge this, because jersey does stretch and the point stands or falls on how much. There is no stretch figure. Not a percentage, not a relaxed and stretched pair of measurements, nothing. The page recommends a layer, publishes a chest at or under the body, and gives no figure for how far the cloth will go. It is worth then running down the ordinary omissions, which are the usual ones. No cloth weight in grams per square metre, and this is a jersey, where the weight is the first thing a maker asks. No button count, and mother of pearl buttons are worth counting because they are the most expensive thing on the garment. No waist, no hip, no shoulder. It is worth then closing on the description itself, which is the oddest thing on the page. After the product information it runs a promotional offer: spend five hundred pounds and receive an Edgar shirt, three hundred for an Edie cardigan, two hundred for a Classic scarf. So the middle tier of the offer gives away this cardigan, which sells for seventy five pounds, to anyone spending three hundred, which is four times its own price. That is a marketing paragraph sitting where the product description should end.
Optional upgrades include holding the ease negative and even across the range instead of letting it cross zero, publishing a stretch figure with the relaxed and stretched chest measured, adding ease for a layer if the garment is to be sold as a layering piece, publishing the waist, the hip and the shoulder width, naming the measurement point for the sleeve, counting the buttons and giving the size and spacing, giving the stitch width of the baby lock edge, quoting the cloth weight in grams per square metre and the knit gauge, stating the GOTS certificate number and its scope, adding shrinkage figures and a drying instruction, organic cotton with OCS, conventional cotton, recycled cotton with GRS, cotton and linen and merino jerseys and fine gauge cotton knits, regular, relaxed and layering fits, three quarter and short sleeves, plain, ribbed and rolled edges, corozo, horn and plastic buttons, zips and no fastening, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.
Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
