Long Pure Wool Coat with a Straight Cut, a Contrast Corduroy Collar, Welt Pockets, an Unlined Interior and Hand Finished Edges

The Long Coat from The Tiny Big Sister, in pure wool navy with a structured silhouette, a contrasting collar, corduroy covered buttons, an unlined interior with hand finished edges, a back seam with a slit and welt pockets, listed at 315 GBP with four of five sizes in stock and a model reference of 173 centimetres wearing a size 36. It is worth beginning with the chart, because the most useful thing about this garment is what it does differently from the coat beside it. This house sells another long coat, at the same price, in the same sizes, under the style number immediately after this one. That one freezes its length at 120 centimetres and grades its sleeve. This one does the exact opposite: it grades its length, from 117 to 121, and freezes its sleeve at 53. It is worth then stating what that settles, which is that neither freeze was necessary. One maker, two coats, two choices, and neither page says anything about it. It is worth then noting where the two coats meet, which is worth doing because it is precise: a size 40 in this coat measures 120 centimetres, which is what every size of the other one measures. It is worth then turning to the model, because this coat has one and the other does not, and it lets this run locate the word long at last. At 173 centimetres wearing a size 36, the published length of 118 centimetres is 68.2 per cent of her height, which puts the hem 55 centimetres from the floor. It is worth then saying what that is, which is below the knee, around mid calf. It is worth then turning to the ease, and comparing it with the other coat, because the comparison is the second finding of this batch. Doubled, the chest runs about 43 and a third to 46 and a half inches, and against bodies of 31 to 39 inches the ease runs 12.31, 11.09, 9.88, 8.67 and 7.46. It is worth then setting that beside the check coat's 10.73, 9.52, 8.31, 7.09 and 5.88, and noticing that the difference is 1.58 inches on every single size. The reference is the Long Coat. The pit to pit figures are flat half measures taken with the coat laid down, doubling to 110, 112, 114, 116 and 118 cm around, or 43.31 to 46.46 in. Against bodies of roughly 31 to 39 in, the ease at the chest runs 12.3, 11.1, 9.9, 8.7 and 7.5 in, falling by about 1.21 in at every step, and this run derives that a grade of g centimetres flat moves the ease by 0.79g minus 2 inches per size, which matches the chart on all four steps. The same house sells a second long coat at the same price under the next style number, and this one gives 1.58 in more ease than that one on every size, because both grade the chest by 1 cm and the two charts start 2 cm apart. The sleeve is 53 cm on all five sizes while the length grades 1 cm per size, which is the opposite of what the other coat does. No waist, no hip and no shoulder are published, and no measurement point is given for the sleeve. Our proposal below grades the sleeve and holds the ease steady.

Occasions and Styling

Suits winter and office wear. A long pure wool coat with a contrast collar works over tailoring, and the unlined body keeps it light through a heated day.

Production and Quality Control

The reference publishes three measurements for all five sizes, grades the chest and the length evenly, publishes a size conversion from its numeric scale to letter sizes, names a model with her height and the size she wears, states its fibre, gives a care instruction appropriate to a pure wool, names its cut, collar, buttons, pockets, back and construction, and names its country of manufacture. It gives no micron, no super number, no cloth weight, no waist, no hip, no shoulder, no measurement point for the sleeve, no collar depth or width, no slit length, no pocket count, no button count, no front and back length, no shrinkage figure, no certification, and no colour bullet, its sleeve does not move across any of its five sizes, and its description and its bullets disagree about what the collar is made of. Three things follow: a sleeve frozen where the coat beside it grades one, a long coat whose length can finally be located on a body, and a contrast collar described two different ways.

Fifty three, five times, and that is the first thing, and it is worth setting it beside the coat next to it before saying anything else, because that comparison is what this batch can offer and no other batch could. Both coats come from the same house. Both are called Long. Both are 315 pounds. Both are sold in sizes 34 to 42. Their style numbers are consecutive: 603 and 604. It is worth then saying what each does, because they are opposites. This coat grades its length, from 117 to 121, and freezes its sleeve at 53. The check coat freezes its length at 120 and grades its sleeve from 52 to 56. It is worth then stating what that settles, which is the finding: one maker made two long coats and froze a different column on each, so neither freeze can be a requirement of the cloth, the cut or the construction. They are choices, and neither page says a word about them. It is worth then noting where the two meet, because it is exact and worth having: a size 40 in this coat is 120 cm, which is what all five sizes of the other one are. It is worth then turning to the ease and making the second comparison, which is just as clean. Doubled, this chest runs 43.31 to 46.46 in, and the check coat's runs 41.73 to 44.88. Against the same bodies, this coat's ease runs 12.31 down to 7.46 and the check coat's runs 10.73 down to 5.88. It is worth then stating the difference, which is 1.58 in on every single size, and saying why it is constant: both grade the chest by 1 cm, so the two charts simply sit 2 cm apart and never converge. It is worth then adding the thing that makes this worth saying, which is that a customer buying from this house gets one and a half inches more room in one long coat than the other, at the same price, and nothing on either page mentions it.

Fifty five centimetres from the floor, and that is the second thing, and it is worth saying how this run arrived at it, because it has only been able to do this a handful of times in sixty four batches. This page gives a model: 173 centimetres, wearing a size 36. The published length for a 36 is 118 centimetres. It is worth then expressing that as a share of her height, which is 68.2 per cent, and then subtracting it, which puts the hem 55 centimetres above the floor. It is worth then saying what that is in plain terms, which is below the knee, around mid calf, and that is what the word long buys. It is worth then noting what this run can now do with that, because it is the third length word this run has been able to measure twice. Ankle, on two pairs of trousers, came out at 38.5 and 41.0 per cent of height. Midi, on two skirts, came out at 40.6 and 46.4. Long, on this coat, comes out at 68.2, and this run can also say that the check coat beside it, at 120 cm, would sit about two centimetres lower on the same woman. It is worth then being fair about the length grading, because it deserves a caveat this run has not given before. The length grades 1 cm per size against bodies that grow more than that, so the hem rides up with every size, which is the same fault this run has found on a cropped tee and a midi skirt. It is worth then saying why it matters less here, which is that a coat hem is not aimed at a landmark on the body, so a centimetre of drift does less damage than it does on a garment whose whole point is where it ends. It is worth then closing on the collar, which is a small thing and worth recording because it is the kind of thing a customer would notice on arrival. The description says a contrasting red collar with corduroy covered buttons. The bullets say a contrasting corduroy collar. It is worth then saying what that means, which is that the page gives two answers to the same question: the collar is either red or corduroy, and no colour bullet anywhere settles it.

Optional upgrades include grading the sleeve across the size set, stating the micron or super number and the weight in grams per square metre for a pure wool, publishing the waist, the hip and the shoulder, the measurement point for the sleeve, the collar depth and width, the slit length, the pocket count and size, the button count, size and spacing, the front and back length, reconciling the description and the bullets on what the collar is made of, adding a colour bullet, shrinkage figures and more photographs, wool cashmere, wool blend and recycled wool coatings, midi and knee lengths, raglan and dropped shoulder sleeves, contrast wool, self and horn buttons, bound seam, half lined and fully lined interiors, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.

Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
