Zip Through Hooded Cotton Poplin Top with Tie Hem Channels

A sage hooded top from Damson Madder in crisp organic cotton poplin with a zip through front, button detail on the side seams, functional tie hem channels, ties on the hood and a branded patch on the arm, listed at 80 GBP with one of six sizes in stock and only the 16 available. It publishes pit to pit, sleeve and length for all six sizes, and it does something no other page in this entire run has done: it names the model. Five foot ten, wearing a UK 10. That single line changes what the rest of the table is worth, because for the first time a length can be placed on a person, and the moment you place it, the words regular fit stop matching the number. The reference is the Blake Hooded Top in Sage. Dongguan Bafinasa Garments Co., Ltd. develops comparable lightweight outerwear on OEM and ODM terms, from cloth selection and trim specification to retail or FBA ready packing. We publish this as a development reference and build your own version of it, and we do not supply the branded original or reproduce anyone else's label.

The chest figures are flat half measures taken with the garment laid down, doubling to 118, 122, 126, 130, 134 and 138 cm around, or 46.5 through 54.3 in. Against the body chart that is about fifteen and a half inches of ease at a UK 6 falling to about thirteen at a UK 16, since the chest grades two centimetres flat per size, or four centimetres of circumference, while the body chart moves two inches. Fifteen inches is a great deal on a garment described as a regular fit. The sleeve runs 70 to 76 cm, grading two centimetres between the first two sizes and one thereafter, with no origin stated, and the length grades a clean two centimetres per size throughout.

Occasions and Styling

Suits everyday wear, weekends, travel and layering in the warmer half of the year. A poplin hooded top is a light layer rather than a coat, and the tie hem channels are what let it be pulled in over a hip or left open, which is the reason it works with jeans and trainers as the reference suggests.

Production and Quality Control

The reference names the model and her size, publishes three columns for all six sizes, states its fibre, describes the front, the hem, the hood and the branding, gives a care instruction and states the country of make. It is the cheapest garment in this run and one of the better specified. Three things follow: what a model height is worth, why regular fit and fifteen inches of ease cannot both be true, and what five trim systems cost on an eighty pound garment.

Five foot ten, and the first model line in this run, and that is the first thing. Every other page examined in this series has published measurements with no model height and no body measurements at all, and this run has complained about it on garment after garment, because a length in centimetres cannot be interpreted without knowing how tall the wearer is. This page gives one line, model is 5 foot 10 and is wearing a UK 10, and it changes the whole table. The UK 10 measures 62 cm of total length, so on a woman of five foot ten this top ends roughly at the high hip. Now put the same 62 cm on a customer of five foot four, which is nearer the average height in most markets, and the garment is fifteen centimetres shorter relative to her frame, so it ends noticeably lower, somewhere between the hip and the top of the thigh, and with a tie hem that difference is visible because the drawcord is gathering the cloth at a different point on the body. That is the entire argument for publishing a model height, and it is worth stating plainly: it costs one line and it converts a column of numbers into something a customer can picture. It is also worth noting what this page still does not give, which is the model's body measurements, so the 63 cm pit to pit on a UK 10 cannot be read as ease on a real body, only against a size chart. The combination that actually works is the one we use: the model's height, the size she wears, and her bust, waist and hip measurements, because then a customer can compare themselves with her directly rather than with a letter. And it is worth adding that on this garment the model line does something else useful, which is that it quietly contradicts the fit claim, which is the next point.

Regular fit, select normal size, at fifteen inches of ease, and that is the second thing. The chest on a UK 10 doubles to 49.6 in around against a 35 in body, which is about fourteen and a half inches of ease, and at a UK 6 it is about fifteen and a half. Set that beside the rest of this run and it does not read as regular: the cotton poplin shirt that was described as straight carried about eleven and a half inches, the two oversized shirts carried eighteen and twenty one, and the wool jacket described as relaxed carried twelve. So by measurement this top sits between the straight shirt and the oversized ones, and closer to the oversized end, and it is made in a non stretch poplin, which means none of that ease is going to give. The words regular fit are doing something slightly different from what the numbers say, and the advice to select your normal size is actually reasonable advice in that light, since a garment with this much ease will accommodate a normal size comfortably and would still accommodate one down. This run has said before that fit words are not measurements and that the same word covers a wide band of numbers, and this is a clean example: regular here means about fifteen inches and straight elsewhere meant eleven, and neither page tells you the number. There is a production point that follows from the ease being what it is. A poplin this generous with a zip through the front has to be cut so that the front does not bulge at the zip, and that means either a faced placket with the zip set behind it or a zip tape with enough body in the surrounding cloth, and it is one of the details that separates a cheap zip front from a good one. And there is a second detail worth naming because it is specific to this garment class: a zip through a woven poplin will wavy if the tape is fed under tension, which is why the tape is usually stayed or the cloth is pre shrunk before the zip is set, and it is a fault that appears after the first wash rather than on the hanger.

Five trim systems on an eighty pound garment, and the claims that come with it, and that is the third thing. The description lists a zip through front, button detail on the side seams, functional tie hem channels, ties on the hood and a branded patch on the arm. That is five separate additions to what would otherwise be a simple poplin top, and each one is an operation, a trim cost and a potential fault: a zip needs a tape, a pull, a stop and a setting operation; side seam buttons need buttonholes and a placket or a facing to sit on; two tie channels need tunnels, openings and drawcords with ends that must not pull through; hood ties need eyelets or a channel and they are the most common cause of a garment failing a children's wear or a general safety review if they are long and unsecured; and a patch needs placement, an edge finish and a submission to approve. None of which is a criticism, because the garment is clearly designed around those details and they are what make it look like what it costs. It is simply worth saying that on a low priced garment the trim list is where the cost sits, and anyone copying this should cost the trims separately rather than assuming the cloth decides the price. Then there is the fibre claim. Organic cotton is stated, and no certifying body is named, so there is no way to tell whether it is certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard, to the Organic Content Standard, or claimed on the basis of a supplier declaration, and those are three different positions with three different costs and three different paperwork trails. This run has met the same shape of claim twice before, a regenerative cotton with no programme named and a virgin wool that turns out to mean only that the fibre is new, and the recommendation is identical each time: name the standard, and if there is one, be able to produce the transaction certificate, because the claim is worth more when it is verifiable and it is the first thing a large retailer will ask for. Two smaller points are worth having on the record. The style code reads SS26 while the collection it is filed under is AW26 and the other garment from this house in this batch reads AW26, which is the kind of inconsistency that suggests a code carried over from an earlier season, and it matters only because style codes are how reorders are placed. And one of six sizes is in stock, and it is the largest, so as with several garments in this run the published size set is six wide and the one that can be examined today is a single size at the end of the range. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.

Optional upgrades include adding the model's body measurements alongside her height, which would turn the chest figure into readable ease, stating the cloth weight in grams per square metre, naming the certifying body behind the organic claim and holding the transaction certificate, publishing the sleeve origin, since 70 cm from a shoulder seam and 70 cm from the neck are different garments, offering a closer fit with five to seven inches less ease as a second option, quoting the zip, the side seam buttons, the two drawcord systems and the arm patch as separate line items so the trim cost is visible, securing hood ties to a safe length, a collar version and a fixed hem version, a half zip option, length and sleeve options, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.

Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
