A-Line Midi Skirt in Cotton Corduroy with an Elasticated Waist

A dusky pink corduroy skirt from LABO.ART falling from an elasticated waist to a midi length in a softly structured A-line, with side seam pockets, listed at 212 GBP with four of five sizes in stock and size 4 sold out. It publishes two columns for all five sizes, waist and total length, and the waist column is worth doing the arithmetic on, because it produces something this run has not met before. The published waist doubles to 26.8 inches around at the smallest size and 31.5 at the largest, against a body waist that runs from 24 to 32 inches, which means the ease falls from about three inches at the bottom of the range to slightly below zero at the top. A skirt whose relaxed waist is smaller than the body it is sized for can only be worn because the elastic stretches, and no stretched figure is published anywhere. The reference is the Gea Sarca Skirt in Canyon. Dongguan Bafinasa Garments Co., Ltd. develops comparable skirts on OEM and ODM terms, from cloth selection and waistband construction to retail or FBA ready packing. We publish this as a development reference and build your own version of it, and we do not supply the branded original or reproduce anyone else's label.

The waist figures are flat half measures taken with the skirt laid down, doubling to 68, 70, 72, 76 and 80 cm around, or 26.8 through 31.5 in. Set against the body chart, whose waist runs 24, 26, 28, 30 and 32 in, the ease is about two and three quarter inches at size 0, one and a half at size 1, and then effectively nothing: at sizes 3 and 4 the published relaxed waist is slightly smaller than the body the skirt is sized for, so the garment fits only because the elastic stretches. No stretched figure is published. The grade is uneven, one centimetre between the first three sizes and two between the last two, and the same waist column appears on the other skirt from this house in this run. The length grades one centimetre per size across all five.

Occasions and Styling

Suits autumn and winter, everyday wear, weekends and work. A corduroy A-line at this length is a cold weather skirt, and the dusky pink shade the reference calls a neutral does behave like one, since it sits with grey, navy and brown knitwear without arguing.

Production and Quality Control

The reference states its fibre, names the cloth, publishes two columns for all five sizes, describes the shape, the waistband and the pockets, gives a care instruction, states the country of make and publishes a style number. Three things follow: what a waist measurement that falls below the body means, what A-line is worth without a hem figure, and what an elasticated waistband has to specify.

Ease that reaches zero and then goes negative, and that is the first thing. The published waist doubles to 68, 70, 72, 76 and 80 cm around. The body chart this run works to puts the waist at 24, 26, 28, 30 and 32 inches, or 61, 66, 71, 76 and 81 cm. So the difference runs about plus seven, plus four, plus one, zero and minus one centimetre: roughly two and three quarter inches of ease at the smallest size and nothing at all by the largest, with the last two sizes publishing a relaxed waist slightly smaller than the body they are labelled for. Now, this is not a fault in the skirt, because the waistband is fully elasticated and an elasticated band is supposed to stretch, and a skirt designed to sit at the waist with a little tension in the band is a normal and comfortable construction. What it means is that the published figure is not the figure that fits anyone at the top of the range, and the figure that does, the stretched one, is not published. There is a second ambiguity stacked on top of the first, and it is specific to elasticated garments. Taking a flat measurement across an elasticated band depends entirely on how the garment was laid: laid with the elastic relaxed and the gathers spread flat, you measure close to the ungathered width; laid as it sits, you measure the gathered width, which is smaller; and stretched flat, you measure more again. Three honest ways to take one measurement, three different numbers, and no page in this run says which was used. The remedy for any brand is two figures in one cell, relaxed and stretched, which costs a few words and turns a guess into a range. There is a consequence for the developer as well. If you copy 34 and 40 cm off this page as your waist spec and put a fixed waistband on your version, the top of your range will not close, because the elastic was doing a centimetre and a half of work that your pattern does not know about. We measure elasticated garments both ways and we put both numbers on the spec.

A-line, with no width at either end, and that is the second thing. The shape is described as softly structured into an A-line, and there is no hip measurement and no hem circumference on the page. An A-line is defined by two widths and the distance between them: the waist, which is given, and the hem, which is not. A gentle A-line on a midi might measure 130 cm around the hem and a pronounced one might measure 180 or more, and those are visibly different skirts with different cloth consumption and different prices, and the word A-line covers both. This run has now met the same gap three times on skirts and on every wide leg trouser it has examined, and the pattern is consistent enough to be a convention: garments are described by shape and measured only where they are narrow. It is worth saying what that costs. Without the hem figure nobody can tell how much cloth is in the skirt, and therefore nobody can cost it, and without the hip figure nobody can tell whether it will pull across the seat, which is the failure a midi skirt actually suffers from. Then there is the cloth. Corduroy is specified by its wale count, the ribs to the inch, and no count is given, so a fine wale and a wide wale are both possible readings of this page, and they are different cloths at different prices. The weight is described as reassuring, which is the fourth time this run has met a weight claim without a number, after heavyweight, finest and soft, and it is worth repeating why the number matters here: on an A-line midi the weight is what decides whether the skirt swings or hangs, and whether the hem holds the shape the word structured implies. As on every corduroy in this run, the cloth has a nap and must be cut one way, which raises cloth consumption by roughly five to ten per cent and makes shade variation between panels an inspection point.

What an elasticated waistband has to specify, and what else is missing, and that is the third thing. A waistband that does all the fitting is a component that needs specifying like one. Three numbers decide how it behaves: the width of the elastic, since a narrow band digs and a wide one spreads the load; its modulus, which is how much force it takes to stretch, and which decides both the range and how the skirt feels; and its recovery, which is whether it returns, because an elastic that stretches and stays stretched will leave the skirt slipping down after an hour. Rolling is the common fault, and it is prevented by the width, by the modulus and by a topstitched channel that holds the band flat. None of that is visible on a page, and none of it is expensive to specify, and it is the difference between a waistband that works for a season and one that works for the life of the garment. Then there are the absences that are no longer surprising but are still worth counting. No model information appears, so the 78 cm length cannot be placed on a body, and a midi is the length most sensitive to that. One photograph appears, a single front view, so the A-line cannot be seen in profile and the side seam pockets, which the page names, cannot be seen at all. Size 4 is sold out, so the largest size in the published range is the one that cannot be checked. And the care instruction is machine wash at 30 with no tumble drying, which is the right instruction for a cotton corduroy and which this run has seen on every corduroy garment it has examined, while the wool garments beside them are all dry clean only, which is the clearest demonstration in the run that the instruction follows the cloth and the finish rather than the fibre. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.

Optional upgrades include publishing both the relaxed and the stretched waist, since at the top of this range the elastic is doing all of the work and the published figure is below the body it is labelled for, publishing the hem circumference and the hip measurement, which between them define an A-line and cost a minute with a tape, stating the wale count in ribs per inch and the cloth weight in grams per square metre, specifying the elastic width, modulus and recovery so the band does not roll or slacken, adding a model height and body measurements, adding a side and back view so the shape can be seen in profile, a fixed waistband or half elasticated option for anyone who wants a defined waist, knee and maxi lengths, pocket alternatives, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.

Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
