Pleated Full Midi Skirt in Heavyweight Cotton Twill

A navy midi skirt from LABO.ART in a heavyweight cotton twill, cut full with pleats, a half elasticated waistband with pocket detail, a side pocket and a button and zip fly, listed at 224 GBP with all five sizes in stock. It publishes two columns for all five sizes, waist and total length, and the striking thing about a table that short on a skirt is what is absent from it: there is no hip measurement anywhere on the page. For a pleated skirt, where the hip is what the pleats have to cover and the hem is what makes the shape, the two published numbers are the two least consequential ones, and the words full and architectural are left carrying the whole description with nothing behind them. The reference is the Otto Mel Skirt in Atlantic. Dongguan Bafinasa Garments Co., Ltd. develops comparable skirts on OEM and ODM terms, from cloth selection and pleat specification to retail or FBA ready packing. We publish this as a development reference and build your own version of it, and we do not supply the branded original or reproduce anyone else's label.

The waist figures are flat half measures taken with the skirt laid down, doubling to 68, 70, 72, 76 and 80 cm around, or 26.8 through 31.5 in. Against the body chart that is about three inches of ease at size 0, which is ordinary for a skirt meant to sit at the natural waist, and the half elasticated band means the figure is a relaxed one rather than a fixed one, so the comfortable range is wider than the number suggests. The grade is uneven, one centimetre between the first three sizes and two between the last two. The length grades one centimetre per size across all five, so the whole size range sits within four centimetres of length, and no hip measurement and no hem width appear anywhere on the page.

Occasions and Styling

Suits work, everyday wear, weekends and autumn or winter with knitwear and boots. A heavyweight twill with pleats holds its shape in cold weather in a way a lighter cloth would not, and a midi at 86 to 90 cm works with a flat shoe or a boot, which is the styling the fullness here is built for.

Production and Quality Control

The reference states its fibre, names the cloth as a heavyweight twill, describes the waistband, the pocket, the pleats and the fastening, gives a care instruction, states the country of make and publishes a style number. It publishes two measurement columns for all five sizes. Three things follow: what it means to sell a skirt with no hip measurement, what heavyweight and pleated cost when neither is specified, and what the length grade does across five sizes.

No hip, no hem, on a garment that is all hip and hem, and that is the first thing. A skirt is fitted on two numbers, the waist and the hip, and this page publishes one of them. The omission matters more here than it would on a straight skirt, because the whole construction of a pleated skirt is a way of absorbing the difference between the two: the pleats are closed or partly closed across the hip and open below it, and the amount of cloth in them is set by how much hip the waist has to clear. Without a hip figure nobody can tell how much ease the pleats are carrying, and therefore nobody can tell whether this skirt will pull across the seat on a body three inches larger than the one it was drafted for. It is the kind of gap that produces a fitting failure rather than a return, because the waist will do up and the skirt will still be wrong. The second omission is the one that does the real damage to the description. The copy calls this skirt full and architectural, and those words are the entire commercial argument, and there is no hem circumference, no sweep, and no number of pleats to support them. A full midi skirt might measure anywhere from 150 to well over 250 cm around the hem, and those are visibly different garments with different cloth consumption and different prices. Two garments can both honestly be called full and differ by half a metre of cloth at the hem. Anyone costing a copy is costing blind until that number exists, which is why it is the first thing we ask for on a skirt reference and the first thing we measure on a sample. The remedy is three numbers, hip, hem and pleat count, and they cost a minute with a tape measure.

Heavyweight, finest, and pleats that have to survive a wash, and that is the second thing. The cloth is described as the finest heavyweight cotton, which is a phrase that sells and does not specify, since heavyweight on a woven cotton could mean anything from a 250 to a 400 gram twill and the difference is a difference in drape, in warmth, in how the pleats hang and in the price per metre. There is a direct consequence for the pleats. A pleat is a folded edge held in cloth by heat and pressure, and whether it survives depends on the fibre, the finish and the weight of the cloth: on a light cotton a pleat will begin to soften after a few washes, and on a heavyweight twill it holds better, but holding it in a machine washable garment at 30 degrees usually requires either a heat setting process on a pleating machine or a resin based permanent press finish, and each has a cost and a hand feel and a formaldehyde position to declare. The page says machine wash at 30 and says nothing about pleat retention, and those two statements are in tension, because an unset pleat on a washable cotton softens. For anyone developing this there are three routes worth quoting separately: heat set pleats, which hold best and cost a pleating operation; a resin finish, which holds well and alters the hand and has a chemical declaration attached; and a cloth with enough body that the pleat holds unaided, which is the most expensive per metre and the least industrial. We would also put a wash test on the sample before bulk, three cycles and then measure whether the pleat depth at the hem has changed, because it is the single failure most likely to appear on this garment after the customer has it. The care instruction adds a smaller point: do not tumble dry is correct for a pleated garment and worth keeping on any version made from this block.

Four centimetres of length across five sizes, and what else is missing, and that is the third thing. The length runs 86 through 90 cm, one centimetre per size, so the whole range sits inside four centimetres, and since bodies get larger across that range without necessarily getting taller, the skirt lands at a slightly different point on the leg on every size and there is no way to tell where, because there is no model height and no body measurements anywhere on the page. A midi is the length most sensitive to this, since it is deliberately cut to finish somewhere on the calf and a four centimetre difference moves it from below the calf to mid calf, which is a different look on the same person. A single length is a defensible choice for a small collection, and a tall and a regular length are the obvious upgrade. Then there is the waistband. Half elasticated is stated, and it is a genuinely useful construction on a woven skirt because it gives comfort without showing elastic at the front, but it means the published waist is a relaxed measurement and the stretched measurement, which is the one that decides who can get the skirt on, is not given. Elasticated to some figure is what is needed, and it is almost never published. One photograph appears, a single front view, so the pleats, the pocket detail and the back of the waistband are described but not shown, and the silhouette the copy is selling cannot be checked. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.

Optional upgrades include publishing the hip measurement and the hem circumference, without which a pleated skirt cannot be fitted or costed, stating the cloth weight in grams per square metre, since heavyweight covers a range that doubles the price, specifying the pleat type and depth and quoting heat set, resin finished and self holding options separately, adding a pleat retention wash test to the sample stage, publishing the stretched waist figure alongside the relaxed one, adding a model height and body measurements, offering regular and tall lengths rather than holding the range inside four centimetres, a fixed waistband option alongside the half elasticated one, patch or welt pocket alternatives, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.

Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
