Production and Quality Control

The care line here covers washing, drying and ironing in one sentence, which is the most complete in this project. The print explains one clause of it and the other clause is a testable claim. Three things follow: what a complete care line is worth, what a placement print demands, and a source that is strong on data and thin on photographs.

A care line that covers all three steps, and the print explains part of it, and that is the first thing. This series has complained for most of its length that care lines say what is permitted without saying how to do it: dry clean only, hand wash only, machine washable, each of which names a state without naming a temperature, an action or a finishing step. This page gives a temperature, forbids a specific action and specifies an ironing setting, all in one line, and it is the first here to cover the three things that actually damage clothes. Washing, drying and ironing are where almost all domestic damage happens, and a line that addresses all three is doing real work rather than managing liability. The ironing clause is the most interesting part, because warm iron on reverse side is not boilerplate. The garment carries a placement print, and pressing the face of a print applies heat directly to the ink through the surface of the cloth, which can glaze it, make it shine or make it stick. Second, there is no repeat to match across seams, but there is a placement to keep identical across sizes, and that is a stricter requirement in practice, since the print has to sit at the same point on the chest in a 34 as in a 42 while the panel the chest occupies is a different width. Third, because the artwork is the whole point of the garment, a small shift is visible in a way that a small shift in a repeating print is not. The practical consequence is that placement should be specified as a measurement on the fit sample, tied to a fixed reference such as the distance below the neckline rib at centre front and the position across from the armhole, and then checked on the bulk rather than approved by eye. This is the same class of requirement as the embroidery placement on the shirt in this batch, and it is the kind of thing that costs nothing to specify and cannot be fixed afterwards.

One photograph, five sizes and a source that is strong on data and thin on pictures, and that is the third thing. This page gives a complete measurement table for five sizes, states the origin, the certification of the fibre, the care line in full, the style number and the stock position, and carries a single photograph. Almost every listing worked through before this batch carried two to five photographs and one measured size, a composition line and no care method. The anti-pilling claim should be verified by a wash test at the sample stage rather than accepted, and print placement should be written as a measurement, not described in words.
