Wide Leg Corduroy Trouser with a Fully Elasticated Waistband

A brown wide leg trouser from LABO.ART in cotton corduroy with a fully elasticated waistband, two side pockets and a slight taper through the leg, listed at 217 GBP with all five sizes in stock. It publishes waist, total length and inseam for all five sizes, and the inseam column is the cleanest this run has seen: 74, 75, 76, 77 and 78 cm, one centimetre per size, which means the derived rise comes out at a constant 26 cm across the whole range. That is not a small thing, because the trouser published beside this one in the last batch, from the same house and at the same price, had its rise close up from 26 to 24 cm across the same size span. Two garments, one pattern office, and one of them grades the rise and the other does not. The reference is the Chiaro Velluto Pant in Cacao. Dongguan Bafinasa Garments Co., Ltd. develops comparable trousers on OEM and ODM terms, from cloth and wale selection to retail or FBA ready packing. We publish this as a development reference and build your own version of it, and we do not supply the branded original or reproduce anyone else's label.

The waist figures are flat half measures taken with the trouser laid down, doubling to 68, 70, 72, 76 and 80 cm around, or 26.8 through 31.5 in, which is about three inches of ease at size 0 against the body chart. On a fully elasticated waistband that is a relaxed figure, and the stretched figure is not published, so the usable range is considerably wider than the number and nobody can tell how much wider. The inseam grades one centimetre per size throughout, so subtracting it from the total length gives a rise of 26 cm on every size, held constant across the range, where the trouser published beside this one in the previous batch closes from 26 to 24 cm over the same span. No hip measurement and no leg opening width are published.

Occasions and Styling

Suits autumn and winter, everyday wear, weekends, travel and relaxed workplaces. A corduroy wide leg is a cold weather trouser, and the taper the reference describes is what keeps it from reading as a culotte, so it takes a boot or a flat shoe more easily than a straight wide leg does.

Production and Quality Control

The reference states its fibre, names the cloth, publishes three columns for all five sizes, describes the waistband, the leg and the pockets, gives a care instruction and states the country of make. Three things follow: what a constant rise tells you when the trouser beside it does the opposite, what a fully elasticated waistband does to a published waist figure, and the naming and specification gaps around corduroy that this run has now met three times.

Twenty six centimetres on every size, and the trouser next to it that does not manage it, and that is the first thing. Subtracting the published inseam from the published total length gives 26, 26, 26, 26 and 26. The Bonnie trouser published in the previous batch, from the same house, at the same price, in the same size range, gives about 26, 25, 24, 24 and 24. Same brand, same season, one constant and one closing by two centimetres, and the difference is visible in the inseam columns: this one grades 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, a clean centimetre a size, and that one grades 74, 76, 78, 79, 80, two centimetres and then two and then one and then one. Now, it is worth being careful about how much to conclude, because a rise derived by subtraction inherits any rounding in both columns, and a two centimetre drift over five derived numbers is not proof of a pattern decision. But the evenness of this table is the point. A grade that moves in clean ones across every column is a grade that was set deliberately and checked, and a grade that moves in twos and then ones is a grade where at least one column was adjusted after the fact, or transcribed from a different source. For anyone developing trousers the practical lesson is to treat the rise as a first class measurement rather than a remainder. Publish it, grade it, and check it at the top and bottom size on a fit model, because it is the measurement that decides comfort and it is the one that disappears when only the length and the inseam are given. Twenty six centimetres, or about ten and a quarter inches, is a mid rise and a sensible one for a trouser with an elasticated waist, which is presumably why this one holds it.

A fully elasticated waistband, and a published waist that is only the beginning of the answer, and that is the second thing. The waist is published as 34 cm flat on the smallest size, doubling to 68 cm around, or 26.8 in, against a 24 in body, which is about three inches of ease. On a fixed waistband that would be the number. On a fully elasticated one it is the relaxed state of a band that is designed to stretch, and the stretched figure is the one that decides who can get the trouser on and how it feels after an hour of sitting, and it is not published. An elasticated waistband in this class will typically give another eight to twelve centimetres, which on a 68 cm relaxed waist is a range of roughly 68 to 78 cm around, and that is the difference between a trouser that fits one body and a trouser that fits two sizes. This is not a complaint about the garment, since a comfortable elasticated trouser is exactly the product, and it is the reason the style works. It is a complaint about disclosure, and it has a cheap fix: publish both figures, relaxed and stretched, in the same cell, and the range that the garment actually covers becomes visible. There is a production point that belongs beside it. Elasticated waistbands are specified by the width of the elastic, by its modulus, and by how it is fed into the band, and those three decide both the range and the recovery, because an elastic that gives ten centimetres and does not recover will leave the trouser slipping after a day. A band that recovers needs a decent modulus elastic and usually a topstitched or channel construction to stop it rolling, and rolling is the single most common fault on this type of waistband. We test recovery by stretching the band and letting it rest, and we would quote the elastic specification on the tech pack rather than leaving it to the line to choose.

Velluto again, and corduroy specified by nothing, and that is the third thing. This is the second garment in this run whose style name says velluto, Italian for velvet, while the copy describes corduroy, and the same note applies: velvet is a cut pile on a plain ground, corduroy is a cut pile in wales, and a buyer or a spec writer working from the name alone will order the wrong cloth, which is why the house style name should never be the only cloth description on a tech pack. Then there is the specification gap, which is the same one this run has now met on every corduroy garment. Corduroy is specified by its wale count, the number of ribs to the inch, and no count is given here, only the word corduroy and the colour. A fine wale and a wide wale in the same brown are visibly different trousers, they drape differently, they take dye differently and they cost differently, and there is no way to buy this cloth from the page without choosing a wale and hoping. No weight is given either, and corduroy is normally quoted in both numbers together. There is a cutting consequence specific to this cloth that belongs in any costing. Corduroy has a nap, so it must be cut one way with every panel running the same direction, which raises cloth consumption by roughly five to ten per cent over a cloth that can be cut either way, and it makes shade and sheen variation between panels a real inspection point, since two panels cut in opposite directions read as two different browns under light even from the same dye lot. Then there is the leg itself. Wide leg with a slight taper is described, and no leg opening width is published, so the taper, which is the detail that distinguishes this trouser from the straight wide leg beside it, has no number behind it, and the hip is unpublished as well. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.

Optional upgrades include publishing the stretched waist alongside the relaxed one, since an elasticated band makes the single figure only half the answer, publishing the leg opening width so the taper has a number behind it, publishing the hip measurement, publishing the rise as its own figure and grading it deliberately, stating the wale count in ribs per inch and the cloth weight, which together specify a corduroy, specifying the elastic width, modulus and recovery so the band does not roll or slacken after a day, offering a straight wide leg and a fuller leg alongside the tapered one, a half elasticated or fixed waistband option, a higher rise option, regular and long inseams, back pocket options, a model height and body measurements, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.

Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
