A dark green cardigan from Skall Studio knitted in cotton jersey pointelle with long sleeves, baby lock edges and a mother of pearl button front, listed at 75 GBP with all four sizes in stock. It publishes chest, sleeve and length for all four sizes, which allows something this series does not often get to do: put a knit and two woven shirts from the same maker side by side and read the ease off each. The shirts carry twenty one and eighteen inches. This carries half an inch. That single comparison says more about what fit language means than any amount of description, and it is the argument for publishing tables at all. The reference is the Edie Cardigan in Dark Green. Dongguan Bafinasa Garments Co., Ltd. develops comparable knitwear on OEM and ODM terms, from yarn and stitch development to retail or FBA ready packing. We publish this as a development reference and build your own version of it, and we do not supply the branded original or reproduce anyone else's label.

The chest figures are flat half measures taken with the knit laid down, doubling to 80, 84, 88 and 92 cm around, or 31.5, 33.1, 34.6 and 36.2 in. Our size XS body measures 31 in at the bust, so the smallest size carries about half an inch of ease, and because both garment and body grade two inches per size the gap stays roughly constant across the set. That is a knit rather than a woven problem and a knit rather than a woven answer: the cotton jersey stretches to go on and recovers, so close to nothing in ease is intended rather than careless. It also means anyone between sizes, or anyone wanting to wear this over anything thicker than a thin layer, should be told so in advance, because unlike the two shirts in this run there is no spare room to borrow from. Total length of 54 to 55.5 cm is 21.3 to 21.9 in, which is cropped at the natural waist.

Occasions and Styling
Suits everyday wear, layering over a slip dress or a tee, work under a blazer and travel, since a fine cotton knit packs flat and weighs little. The reference suggests wearing it over a silk slip dress or on its own with faded wide leg jeans, and the cropped length is what makes both work, because it stops at the waist rather than competing with whatever it is worn over.
Production and Quality Control
The reference publishes chest, sleeve and length for all four sizes, states its yarn as organic cotton jersey pointelle with GOTS certification, names mother of pearl buttons, and gives all four sizes in stock. Four photographs is above the usual standard in this run. Three things are worth working through: what half an inch of ease means next to twenty one inches elsewhere in this run, why the length grade is so small, and what baby lock edges and a missing gauge imply for anyone making it.
Half an inch against twenty one, in the same run from the same shop, and that is the first thing. This series has now published six hundred and odd examinations and the recurring complaint has been that fit words carry no information, that oversized appears on garments with four inches of ease and thirty, that true to size means whatever the writer wants it to mean, and that without a number there is no way in. Put this page next to the Cilla shirt from the same maker and the point makes itself. Twenty one inches of ease there, half an inch here, both called simply what they are in one word each, very oversized and slim fit, and only the arithmetic tells you they are not remotely the same kind of garment. It is worth being precise about why the cardigan can get away with it, because that is where an unwary developer would go wrong copying the numbers. A cotton jersey pointelle stretches on the body and comes back, so a chest measurement half an inch larger than the bust is wearable in a way that would be unwearable in a woven poplin, and copying this ease onto a woven would produce something that could not be buttoned. The second point is commercial rather than technical. At this ease, the size a customer buys is their actual size, which is simple to sell and produces few returns, but it also means the garment does one job only, and a customer who wants to wear it over a shirt rather than under it needs the next size up and a warning that the length will barely change.
Half a centimetre of length per size, and what that does to a size range, and that is the second thing. Chest grades two centimetres of flat width per size, sleeve grades one centimetre, and total length grades half a centimetre. Half is a very small grade, below anything most wearers can feel, and it produces a size set where the XS is 54 cm long and the L is 55.5 cm, a difference of one and a half centimetres across four sizes, or about five eighths of an inch. Read one way that is entirely sound, because a cropped cardigan is cut to a fixed proportion and lengthening it per size would change the silhouette rather than fit anybody better. Read the other way it is a choice with consequences to state up front. A taller customer sizing up for length will get width they did not ask for and barely any length, which is the exact failure mode that generates returns on cropped knits, and nothing on the page anticipates it. It is also asymmetric with the sleeve, which does grade a centimetre, so across four sizes the sleeve grows twice as much as the body does, and the proportional relationship between sleeve and body is therefore not preserved. None of this is a defect at this price and in this construction, and this series would not call it one. It is the sort of thing that should be written down once, agreed at sampling, and then held steady in bulk, which is a different discipline from getting it right once.
Baby lock edges, no gauge, and the practicalities of making this, and that is the third thing. Baby lock means the edges are finished with an overlock stitch rather than turned and hemmed, which is faster, sits flatter under a layer, and is why the cardigan can be fine and lightweight enough to pack into almost nothing. It also means there is no hem to take weight, so the edge is the weakest part of the garment and the first place it will curl or fray, and anyone developing this should know that the choice is being made deliberately rather than inherited. On specification, neither gauge nor yarn count nor cloth weight is stated, which for a knit is a wider gap than it sounds, because in knitwear those three together determine almost everything that matters: how much it stretches, whether it recovers, how it drapes, how much it costs, and how it behaves after washing. The page names pointelle, which identifies the stitch structure and is genuinely useful, and stops there. Mother of pearl buttons are stated, and this series has watched for this specific pairing throughout: shell buttons are brittle under heat and detergent, the care instruction here is a machine wash at 30 with no concession stated, and that combination deserves a wash test on a sample before it goes into production rather than a note in a file afterwards. GOTS is claimed without a certifying body or licence number, which is normal on retail pages and costs nothing to fix on ours. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.
Optional upgrades include stating gauge, yarn count and weight in grams per square metre, since a knit cannot be costed or reproduced without them, wash testing the mother of pearl buttons against the stated machine wash rather than assuming they tolerate it, offering either a turned hem or a rib band alongside the baby lock edge for anyone who wants more durability at the hem, adding one to two inches of ease as a second fit option so the piece can layer over something, lengthening the grade to one centimetre per size or stating plainly that length is intentionally fixed, publishing model body measurements next to the 177 cm height already given, naming the GOTS certifying body and licence number, adding a photograph that shows the pointelle structure at close range, since four images none the less stay at garment distance, neckline depth, button count, sleeve length, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.
Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
