Flat half measures, so doubling the width gives 94, 96, 102 and 104 cm around, or 37.0, 37.8, 40.2 and 40.9 in. Note the step between the 36 and the 38: three centimetres where every other step is one. Figures are published in whole centimetres, so a one centimetre wobble carries no information, but a step three times the size of its neighbours is larger than rounding can produce, and it means the 36 to 38 boundary is the least predictable place in the range.

Production and Quality Control

This page is complete for every size, states the wearer height, and carries five photographs. It is also the first in this project where a care instruction traces to a stated cause, because the page says which parts of the garment are delicate. Three things follow: what the table shows that the prose does not, what the buttons and panels do to the instruction, and what a promotion inside a description field costs.

A step three times too large, and a word doing two jobs, and that is the first thing. The width grades one centimetre, then three, then one. Measurement tables are published in whole centimetres, so a single centimetre of wobble between neighbouring sizes is noise and supports no conclusion at all. A step of three, in a run where every other step is one, is outside what rounding can produce, so either the 36 or the 38 is not where the underlying grade put it. This matters more than a single odd figure usually would, because it lands on a boundary a customer actually shops on. Somebody measuring between a 36 and a 38 on this page is standing at the widest jump in the range, so they are the most likely of any customer here to choose wrongly, and the table that was meant to prevent that has introduced it. Related to this, and worth working through carefully rather than scored as a contradiction, is the word fitted. The reference describes a fitted shape and this series has spent a long time treating fitted as a promise about how close something sits. The table does not support that reading, since the 34 measures thirty seven inches around against a body of about thirty one, which is five or six inches of ease rather than a close cut. But the description also says the cutlines below the bust and at the back give it a tailored silhouette, and on that reading fitted means shaped rather than tight, which the table supports exactly. The honest conclusion is that the word is doing two jobs and this project has been resolving it from a single table ever since it started being able to read one. Where a page gives both a description and a table, the table decides.

Mother of pearl and lace, and a care instruction that can finally be traced, and that is the second thing. The cloth is one hundred percent organic cotton, GOTS is named, and the instruction is hand wash only. In this batch alone there are two garments in one hundred percent organic cotton, and this is the one that says hand wash. That comparison is worth setting down because it is the cleanest version yet of something this project has argued across hundreds of examinations: the fibre does not decide the instruction. What decides it here is visible in the description rather than hidden. Half the shirt is lace embroidery and floral embroidery, which is an openwork surface with thread standing proud of a ground, and that is the kind of structure that snags on anything it meets in a drum and that loses its shape when it is pulled. The other half is mother of pearl, which is a natural material that chips, does not enjoy heat, and cannot go in a dryer at all. So two separate components each rule out the machine, and the instruction is set by the most vulnerable element present, which is the same principle this project keeps arriving at from different directions. Being able to trace it is the improvement worth crediting, because on the listings worked through earlier the strict instruction usually arrived with nothing on the page to explain it, and this project could only reason about the likely cause. Here the cause is stated. There is a commercial version of this point that is worth putting in front of a buyer, because it is a decision rather than a constraint. If the lace is the reason for hand washing, then a version without it can be machine washed, and that is a cheaper garment to own as well as to make. Whether that version is worth having is a question about the market, not about the cloth, and it should be asked deliberately rather than inherited from a reference.

Lace, pearl and an offer in the description field, and that is the third thing. Five photographs set this apart from most of what is in this batch and from nearly everything worked through before, since the listings examined earlier carried two to five images and far less data, and the source this batch comes from carries far more data and often one image. Disclosure is not one axis, and this page is the best illustration of that, being strong on both. Two further observations finish it. The first concerns shaping, and it is the sort of thing that is invisible in a photograph and expensive to correct late. Cutlines below the bust and at the back mean the garment is shaped by seams rather than by darts or by the cloth draping, and seams have to land in the same place on the body across every size or the shirt reads differently at each one. On a print or an embroidery placement the same requirement applies to where the pattern starts relative to the seam. Both should be fixed as measurements on the fit sample and checked on the bulk, because neither can be adjusted afterwards without recutting. The second concerns a promotion that sits inside the description field. The page carries an offer about gifts received against spend, with images and terms, which is perfectly normal commercial messaging and completely misplaced as a property of a garment. This project has argued recently, working from three listings that shared one structure and nothing else, that these fields are containers being filled with whatever is to hand rather than descriptions written about a garment. An offer with an expiry condition sitting inside a product description is the same observation arriving from a different direction, and it has a practical cost beyond tidiness, since the offer will be wrong long before the shirt stops being sold. A page that describes a garment should age at the rate of the garment. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.

Optional upgrades include correcting the grading so that no single step is three times its neighbours, since the widest jump currently sits on a boundary customers shop on, publishing the same table to a tenth of a centimetre, since whole centimetres cannot show how the grade actually runs, offering a version without the lace panels, which could then be machine washed and would cost less to own as well as to make, offering a substitute for mother of pearl where a machine wash matters more than the material, stating where the embroidery placement starts relative to the bust cutline, since that cannot be changed after cutting, moving commercial offers out of the description field and into a separate module, since an offer ages at a different rate from a garment, keeping the GOTS certification path on the fibre rather than sourcing uncertified organic, since the claim is the reason for the price, publishing the body measurements of the wearer alongside the height already given, length and collar options, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.
