The published size 36 gives a 30 inch bust, a 32 inch waist, a 40 inch hip and a 53 inch length against a model at roughly 34, 23 and 36. The bust is a little under and everything below it is generous, by about nine inches at the waist. That is a shaped bodice over a loose skirt, which is what the boning and the optional tie are for.

Boning does two different jobs and here it is the second one, and that is the first thing, and it is worth separating them because they look identical on a page. We have seen boning once before in this series, on a strapless gown, and there the job was support. A strapless garment has nothing over the shoulders, so it can only stay up by gripping, and we had collected four answers to how it might do that, three of which depended on the cloth and degraded with wear. Boning was the fourth and we called it different in kind from the others, because a bone does not grip, it holds: it is a stiff vertical element that carries the load of the garment downward to the waist instead of letting the garment slide down the body. This garment is not strapless. It has a back zip and a bodice, so support is not the problem being solved. The boning here is described as a shaping corset, and shaping is a different job entirely. A bodice made from a cloth with no elastane in it, which this is, will not hold a smooth line on a body: it creases where the wearer bends, it collapses slightly at the waist, and it follows every change in the surface under it rather than presenting a smooth front. Bones prevent all of that, because a stiff element running vertically cannot wrinkle or collapse along its length. So the same component, performing the same mechanical function, is solving two unrelated problems: keeping a garment up, and keeping a garment smooth. That is worth knowing when specifying it, because the placement differs. Bones placed to support a strapless garment run the full height of the bodice and are about load. Bones placed to shape a bodice are about the areas that crease, which is usually the centre front and the sides, and they can be shorter. We would specify which job each bone is doing rather than asking for boning in general.

Dry clean only looks wrong for polyester until you find the boning, and that is the second thing. By the fibre alone, this garment should be washable. Polyester is one of the most washable fibres there is: it does not shrink, it does not felt, it tolerates warm water and it dries quickly, and we have criticised more than one garment in this series for carrying a stricter instruction than its fibre required. So dry clean only on 100% polyester looks like exactly that kind of mistake. It is not, and the reason is the boning, which is the same lesson we drew on a polyamide dress with brass hardware a few garments ago: when a care instruction is stricter than the fibre needs, look for hardware, embellishment or structure, because that is what it is protecting. Here it is structure. Bones are made of steel or of a synthetic strip, and they are held in channels, and both the bones and the cloth around them suffer in water. Steel bones can rust, which stains the cloth permanently and from the inside where it cannot be treated. Synthetic bones can warp with heat. And a channel holding a bone is a double layer of cloth that dries at a different rate from the rest of the garment, so the areas around the boning will not lie flat afterwards. None of that is repairable. So dry clean only is correct and we would keep it, and we would add a line saying why, because otherwise a customer who knows polyester is washable will assume the instruction is an unnecessary restriction and may ignore it. There is a second reason to be careful with this cloth, which is that crepe is made from highly twisted yarns, and twisted yarns have a tendency to move and shrink when they get wet, so even without the boning a crepe garment wants care in water.

The measurements describe the design precisely, and that is the third thing, and it is a useful check because it lets you confirm that a chart and a construction agree. The bust is published at 30 against a model at 34, so slightly under, which is what a boned bodice is for and which the back zip makes possible. The waist is 32 against her 23, so nine inches of ease, and the hip is 40 against her 36. So the garment is close through the bodice and loose from the waist down, and the retailer files it under shift dresses, which is a straight shape hanging from the shoulders. Those two descriptions are consistent with each other and with the boning: the bodice is shaped and held smooth by the bones, and everything below it is left to hang. That is a coherent design and it is what the numbers say it is. We have twice now found a chart and a retailer's category agreeing, which is worth using as a check in the other direction: if the numbers and the stated shape disagree, one of them is wrong. The optional tie is the one thing we would clarify on the page. Optional can mean the tie comes with the garment and may be worn without it, or it can mean the tie is not included and may be bought separately, and those are very different propositions for a customer who is imagining how she will wear it. We noted on a lyocell slip that a detachable tie has a real advantage, which is that it makes two garments of one, but that it also gets lost unless it has a home on the garment, and we recommended belt loops. The same applies here, and we would add a clear statement of whether it is included. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.
