Eighty nine and a half inches is not a length until somebody explains it, and that is the first thing. The chart gives the length as 89.5 inches, which is about 227 centimetres, and the model is 182 centimetres tall. A gown that reaches the floor on somebody of that height is around 140 to 150 centimetres, which we established recently when we looked at a velvet maxi published at approximately 142 cm on a model at 179 cm and found it was floor length on her. This is 80 centimetres longer than that. There are two possible readings and they call for different responses. The first is that the figure is wrong, which given that every other number on this chart is plausible is the likelier of the two, and which needs nothing more than correcting. The second is that it is not the skirt length at all but the total including a train, which is a real thing on a gown and which a customer genuinely needs to know, because a train changes how the garment is walked in, carried and altered. Either way the correct response is not to publish the number as it stands. A figure the customer cannot interpret is not information, and we have said this in various forms throughout this series, most directly when we recommended that a length be published alongside the height of the model it was measured on. That advice covers the ordinary case. This is beyond it: 227 centimetres is not a length that needs a height beside it, it is a length that needs a sentence explaining what it covers. We would establish which of the two it is and then say so.

A halter puts the weight somewhere different, and heavy cloth makes that matter, and that is the second thing. On most dresses the weight is carried either over the shoulders by straps or around the body by the waist and bust. A halter carries it at the back of the neck, because the straps meet behind the neck rather than sitting on top of the shoulders. That matters for two reasons. The first is that the back of the neck is a sensitive place and poorly suited to carrying load: it is where the spine is closest to the surface, and it is where a narrow strap cuts in. The second is the cloth. This is described as a heavyweight satin, and heavyweight is doing real work here, since a gown needs weight to hang properly rather than float or cling, which is why we have praised weight in a long jersey dress and in a taffeta. But every gram of that weight is being carried through the halter, so a heavy cloth and a halter neckline compound each other. The practical consequences are specific: the halter straps should be wide rather than narrow, so that the load spreads instead of concentrating, and it is worth considering a detachable strap that shares the load with the shoulders for anyone wearing the gown for a long evening. The closure has the same character. A hook at the back of the neck has to be aligned and then closed in a place the wearer cannot see and can barely reach, and we have built up a rough order of difficulty for fastenings behind the wearer across this series: a zip at the back can be managed, a button behind the back is hard, a tie that has to be knotted behind the back is harder still, and a hook at the back of the neck is the hardest of all because the position is both invisible and awkward. The remedy is not to remove it, since a halter has to close, but to use a slider instead, because a slider is adjusted by pulling and needs no alignment at all. There is one more thing worth saying about the lining here. A polyester lining is slippery, which matters more than it sounds: a heavy gown has to be pulled on over the body, and a slippery lining is the difference between that being easy and being a struggle. We noted the same thing about velvet, which is a high friction cloth and needs a smooth lining for exactly this reason. A lining is not only there to cover.

One figure is under and two are over, and that pattern tells you where to look, and that is the third thing. The bust is published at 30 inches against a model at roughly 34, which is four inches under. The waist is 26 against 23 and the hip is 40 against 36, both over. So one measurement is negative and two are positive, and there is no elastane in this cloth at all. The useful move here is to read the pattern rather than the individual number. If every circumference on a garment were under the body, that would point at stretch, and we would look for the mechanism, as we did on a knit where 23% elastane in a jersey accounted for a bust eleven inches under. If a single measurement is under while its neighbours are over, stretch is a poor explanation, because stretch applies to the whole garment rather than to one place on it. What varies from place to place is where somebody put the tape. On a halter with a low back there is no standard position to measure the bust: there is no side seam to run it from, the armscye is cut away, and the front may be shaped. So the likeliest reading is that the bust was measured somewhere other than the fullest point. We would not treat this as a fit problem to design around. We would measure it ourselves on a sample and publish the number we find, and note that the same question of position arises wherever a garment departs from a standard armhole.
