Virgin wool does not mean what most people think it means, and that is the first thing. The natural reading of virgin is first, so the assumption is that it is the first shearing a sheep ever produces, which would make it a grade of fineness and therefore a good thing. It is not that. Virgin wool in the trade means wool that has never been used before, meaning fibre that has not previously been made into a textile and then reclaimed. The opposite is reclaimed or recycled wool, which is fibre recovered from existing cloth by shredding it, and which is shorter, weaker and duller because the fibres have already been through the process once. So the word is telling you the fibre is new and not that the animal was young. It is worth being precise about this because in the United States it is not marketing language but a defined term with legal weight under the wool labelling rules, and the same body of rules also defines recycled wool and requires each to be labelled as such. So the claim is meaningful and checkable, which is more than can be said for most fibre words on a listing. What the description does not tell you, and what actually determines how this dress will feel, is the diameter of the fibre. Wool prickle is not caused by coarseness in the ordinary sense: it is caused by individual fibres being thick enough to trigger the pain receptors in skin rather than merely bending, and the threshold is around thirty microns. Below roughly twenty microns a fibre bends under the pressure of skin contact and is not felt at all, which is why fine merino can be worn next to the skin. Above it, it registers as itch.
