This is the most elastane we have found, and the chart shows exactly what that buys and where it stops, and that is the first thing. The composition is 77% polyamide with 23% elastane, and the measurements for size S/M are a 22 inch bust, a 20 inch waist and a 36 inch hip, against a model at roughly 33, 24 and 35. So the bust is about eleven inches under the body and the waist about four under, while the hip is level with it. That is a great deal of compression at the top of the garment and none at the bottom, and it is worth being clear about what produces it, because this series has been consistent on the point. A measurement under the body it has to cover needs something on the garment to explain it, and the mechanisms we have collected are knit structure, elastane and bias cutting. Here there is knit structure, since jersey is a knit, and there is a very high level of elastane, and both point the same way. What is more useful than confirming the mechanism is noticing where it stops. The hip is not compressed at all. That is not an oversight, it is the shape: a garment that compresses at the bust and waist and releases at the hip is doing what a fit and flare is supposed to do, and the elastane is what lets one size cover both. Which brings us to the sizes. This garment is offered in three combined sizes, XXS/XS, S/M and M/L, meaning each size spans two conventional ones. That only works with this much recovery: a garment that stretches to fit rather than being cut to fit can span a wider interval, and it cannot do that at 4% elastane, which we have described throughout as a recovery additive rather than something a fit is built around. So the size range and the composition are consistent with each other here, which is more than can be said for most listings, and the practical reading is that a customer between sizes should take the lower one.

Hand wash is right for this fibre, and the thing to watch is the ruffle rather than the cloth, and that is the second thing. Polyamide with elastane is one of the most tolerant compositions in a wardrobe. It washes easily, it dries quickly, it does not shrink, and it recovers from creasing better than almost anything, so hand wash is a perfectly reasonable instruction and is also the gentler option, which matters for a lightweight cloth. The reservation is not about the fibre but about the construction. This garment carries bubble ruffle trim, and a ruffle is a length of cloth gathered or cut on a curve so that it stands away from the body, and its shape is held by the geometry of its edge rather than by anything structural. Here the instruction is right for the cloth, and what it needs is a sentence about the ruffle, telling the wearer not to wring it and to dry it flat rather than hung. That is the difference between an instruction and a usable one.

There is no lining and no closure, and both are the right calls here, and that is worth saying because they are often treated as cost savings, and that is the third thing. The garment is unlined and it is pull-on with no zip. A pull-on closure is only possible when the garment can pass over the shoulders and hips without opening, and that is exactly what 23% elastane provides, so the absence of a zip is not an economy, it is a consequence of the fabric, and it is worth noting what it saves the customer. This series has spent a long stretch on fastenings behind the wearer, running from a back zip that can be managed alone through a button behind the back, a tie that must be knotted, and a hook at the back of the neck, which is the hardest of all because the position is both invisible and awkward. We found a wool dress with three fastenings all at the back and said the honest thing, which is that occasion dress is often easier to get into with help. A pull-on garment removes that entire problem, and it removes the zip as a failure point, since a zip is among the commonest things to break on a dress. The unlined decision is also defensible, though it carries an obligation. A lightweight jersey that compresses this much is being worn close to the body, and the more it stretches the more transparent it becomes, because the same amount of cloth is covering more area.
