The waist is published larger than the bust, and that combination is worth examining rather than accepting, and that is the first thing. The chart gives a 30 inch bust and a 31 inch waist for the same size. It is not impossible for a waist to measure more than a bust on a particular garment, and we have seen the reverse arrangement used deliberately, noting on a slip dress that a waist larger than a bust means the garment is cut as a slight A rather than that anything is wrong. So the shape alone is not the problem. The problem is that the same row also puts the bust four inches under the model wearing it and the waist eight inches over her, and there is no elastane in this composition at all. We have been consistent throughout this series about what a measurement under the body requires: it needs something on the garment that can produce it. The mechanisms we have collected are knit structure, since a loop can open, elastane, and bias cutting, which puts the yarns at forty five degrees to the pull. This garment states none of them. Recycled is a claim that needs a document behind it, and that is worth saying plainly, and that is the second thing. Polyester is the most recycled fibre in the trade, and there are two ways it gets recycled, which are worth separating because they are not equivalent. Mechanical recycling takes existing plastic, usually bottles, and melts and re extrudes it into fibre, and the fibre is shorter each time it goes round, so it is commonly blended with virgin fibre to hold strength. Chemical recycling breaks the polymer back down and rebuilds it, which gives a fibre equivalent to new, and is currently far less common and considerably more expensive. We are not suggesting the claim here is wrong. We are saying that a claim of this kind is the one place on a listing where a customer is entitled to ask for a document rather than a sentence, and that a maker who has the certificate should show it, because it is the difference between a claim and a marketing word. It is worth adding that recycled content has no bearing on how the garment behaves. Recycled polyester performs like polyester: it does not shrink, it dries quickly, it holds a press, and it is machine washable, which is exactly what this listing says.

Machine wash is consistent here, and the thing to test is the trim rather than the cloth, and that is the third thing. The instruction matches the fibre, which is more than can be said for a great many listings in this series, where we have found wool published as dry cleanable, viscose with no instruction at all, and a raffia knit advised to be hand washed when the material breaks in water. Polyester takes machine washing as well as any fibre in a wardrobe. But there is lace trim on this garment, and a trim is a second material with its own tolerances, and trim failure is one of the commonest faults on an otherwise sound garment. Lace narrows, curls and can distort at a different rate from the crepe it is sewn to, and if the two are not compatible in washing the result is a wavy edge that no amount of pressing will remove.
