Oversized Collared Lounge Fleece Sweater: A Collar On Knit, Again

A collar on a fleece sweater is the same problem that a rugby shirt has, with less structure to solve it. A woven collar does not stretch, an oversized knit body does, and the join between them is where the garment either looks designed or looks like a collar was attached to a sweatshirt. Because the body is oversized, there is more knit around a collar that cannot move, which puts more strain on exactly the weakest join.

Loungewear adds one more requirement: it gets washed a lot and it is worn for hours rather than for an evening. So the collar has to survive washing without curling, and the garment has to stay comfortable over a long stretch of wear, which rules out some of the stiffer interlinings that would otherwise make the collar behave.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The collar join is the first. A woven collar on an oversized knit body has to take up the difference between two fabrics that stretch differently, and there is more knit to take up than on a fitted body, so a standard seam puckers. We develop the collar on the actual body cloth, manage the bulk rather than pressing it, and check the collar after the care cycle, because a woven collar and a knit body shrink by different amounts and that is when it shows.

Wash durability is the second and loungewear is unforgiving about it. A collar that is stiff enough to behave when new will curl at the points after washing if the interlining is not right, and because this is worn for hours at a time, the stiffest option is also the least comfortable. We choose the interlining for wash behaviour and comfort together, test the collar after repeated cycles, and check that the placket still closes properly afterwards.

Shrinkage, buttons and surface are the third. Two cloths shrinking differently twists the whole garment, most visibly at the collar, so we test both and compensate the pattern before cutting. Buttons and buttonholes take real load on a placket in a stretch knit, so they are specified as components and tested through repeated opening and closing. On the surface, the brushed face is where pilling shows, and loungewear is worn long enough for that to matter.
