Cozy Sleep Crew Neck Fleece: Sleepwear Rules Are Not The Same As Loungewear

Sleepwear and loungewear look similar and are judged completely differently. Loungewear is judged on how it looks. Sleepwear is judged on whether you notice it, which is a much higher bar: no seam where you lie on it, no label that scratches, no neck that feels tight when you are lying down, and no fabric that overheats. Those are the things that make a sleep garment good, and none of them show in a photograph.

Frequent washing is the other difference. Sleepwear is washed more than almost anything else in a wardrobe, so durability of the hand and of the shape matters more here than on a garment worn occasionally. A fleece that feels extraordinary and goes flat after ten washes is a bad sleep garment however good it looked new.

What Has To Be Specified

• Seam placement and type, so there is nothing to lie on
• Neck comfort, which is judged lying down rather than standing
• Fabric hand, and whether it survives frequent washing
• Breathability, so it does not overheat
• Label and trim placement, since scratchy trims are noticed at night
• Shrinkage, because sleepwear is washed constantly
• Pilling, which shows most on a garment worn in bed
• Fit, which should be loose enough to move in

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

Comfort details are the first and they are what makes or breaks sleepwear. A seam that runs under the shoulder or down the side is felt all night when lying on it, a label at the neck is noticed immediately, and a neck that is comfortable standing can feel tight lying down. We specify seam types and placement rather than defaulting, place labels and prints away from contact points, and set the neck tension for comfort rather than for appearance.

Washing durability is the second and it is the harshest test in this group. Sleepwear is washed far more often than anything else, so the hand has to survive it, the shape has to survive it, and the pile or brushed face must not mat. We test the hand after repeated cycles rather than judging a swatch, test shrinkage before cutting and compensate the pattern, and check pilling on the actual cloth, because pilling is the complaint that ends a sleep garment.

Weight, breathability and fit are the third. Too heavy and the garment overheats, which is worse at night than during the day, so the weight range is a comfort decision rather than a quality signal. Breathability is tested alongside softness rather than assumed from the fibre. The fit should be loose enough to move in without the hem riding up, which we check lying down and moving rather than only standing.
