Plush Graphic Crew Sweatshirt: A Print On A Plain Body Has Nowhere To Hide

A plain crew with a graphic is judged on the print, because there is nothing else to look at. That means edge quality, hand feel and wash durability are the product rather than details of it. On plush all three are harder than on a flat fleece, because the pile moves under the print and because the surface is not flat, so the same artwork will not behave the way it does on a jersey.

The body underneath still matters, and it matters in a specific way: it has to be stable enough to print on and even enough that the pile does not shade differently panel to panel. A great print on a body with uneven pile is still a garment that looks faulty, which is why we treat the two as one problem.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The print is the first and it is what the garment is judged on. On pile, ink sits on a surface that moves and compresses, so edges are softer, cracking starts earlier, and the hand can feel like a film rather than part of the cloth. We choose the method for the actual fabric rather than for cost, control the cure for the thickness, and test wash fastness and stretch on printed samples rather than judging by eye.

Pile evenness and direction are the second. Pile lies in a direction, and panels cut differently shade differently, which on a plain body with a print reads as a fault in the print rather than in the cutting. We control direction at cutting and check shade under consistent light. Placement is set per size, because a fixed distance from the neck puts the graphic in a different place on every size.

Neck rib, shrinkage and packing are the third. The neck rib is what a customer touches first and it has to sit flat, recover after washing and match the body, so we specify it by composition rather than by colour and test recovery over repeated cycles. Shrinkage changes a printed body and can distort the print, so we test before cutting and compensate. Pile is crushed in packing, so we pack so it is protected.
