Cropped Fleece Sweatshirt: Where The Hem Lands Is The Design

A cropped sweatshirt is the clearest example of a garment that is one decision. Everything else, the neck, the sleeve, the body width, is standard. What makes it is where the hem lands, and that is a measurement rather than a style. Two people can both say cropped and be ten centimetres apart, which is why we ask for a number from the shoulder and, better still, a note about where it should sit relative to the waistband of whatever it is worn with.

The second decision is balance. A cropped body has to be balanced front to back for its shorter length, or the hem will ride up at the front the moment the arms lift. That is the most common fault on cropped tops and it is entirely preventable, but only if the pattern is developed as a cropped body rather than cut down from a longer one.

What Has To Be Specified

• Hem position in centimetres from the shoulder
• Front to back balance, checked with arms raised
• Hem treatment: ribbed, plain, or faced
• Body width relative to the shorter length
• Sleeve length and how it relates to the crop
• Neck rib, which is closer to the face on a short body
• Shrinkage, which changes a cropped length proportionally more
• Wash testing, since a cropped body shows shrinkage immediately

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The hem position and the balance are the first and they belong together. A cropped body that is simply shortened from a longer pattern will be unbalanced, and the result is a hem that rides up at the front when the arms lift, which on a cropped top there is nothing below to hide. We develop the cropped length as its own pattern, set the length in centimetres, and check it with arms raised rather than standing flat.

The hem treatment is the second. A plain turned hem on a fleece can flip or roll, a ribbed hem changes the length by its own width, and a faced hem adds bulk at the point where the crop is most visible. None is wrong, but the choice has to be made against the actual cloth rather than by default, and it is worth sampling two versions rather than guessing.

Shrinkage, rib and surface are the third. A short body shrinking by a few percent is visibly shorter, which on a cropped garment changes the design, so we test on the actual cloth and compensate the pattern before cutting. Rib at the hem and neck has to recover after washing or the garment stops looking new, so we specify it by composition and test recovery over repeated cycles. On the surface, the brushed face is where pilling shows first.
