Plush Essential Gym Short: Soft Enough To Wear, Strong Enough To Train In

A gym short in plush is a slightly unusual brief, and worth being honest about. Plush is chosen for softness, and training is hard on fabric: more movement, more washing, more abrasion and more sweat than a lounge short will ever see. None of that means it cannot be done, but it does mean the seams, the waistband and the pile need specifying for use rather than for appearance.

The waistband is where it shows first. Training means bending, squatting and stretching, all of which put load on a band that also has to keep its shape in a thick fabric. That is a specification job, and it is the part we would test hardest before committing to bulk.

• Seam strength and type, specified for movement
• Waistband that holds through bending and squatting
• Leg opening that does not grip or gape in motion
• Pile resistance to abrasion and to washing
• Moisture handling, and how the fabric behaves when wet
• Gusset or reinforced crotch, which takes the most strain
• Shrinkage, since gym shorts are washed often
• Wash testing to more cycles than a lounge garment

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

Durability in movement is the first and it is what separates a gym short from a lounge short. The crotch seam takes the most strain of any seam on any garment, and on a short worn for training it is the one that fails. We specify how it is constructed, reinforce it, and test the garment in movement rather than only looking at it. The waistband is the second load point, so we specify its elastic and test it bending and squatting rather than standing.

Washing and abrasion are the second. Training garments are washed far more often than loungewear, and plush pile is the part that suffers: it mats, it flattens, and it can shade unevenly after repeated cycles. We test to more cycles than we would for a lounge garment, test rubbing on the actual cloth, and check the pile after washing rather than only when new.

Softness, shrinkage and fit are the third. The reason to choose plush is hand feel, so we test that the softness survives the washing it is going to get, rather than accepting a finish that washes out. Shrinkage changes the inseam and the rise measurably on a short, so we test before cutting and compensate. Fit is checked in movement, since a short that fits standing and grips squatting is not fit for purpose.
