Plush Oversized Rugby Sweatshirt: Collar, Placket And A Heavy Body

A rugby sweatshirt is a knit body with woven shirt details on it, and that combination is the whole difficulty. The collar and the placket come from shirt making, the body comes from knitwear, and the two behave completely differently: a woven collar does not stretch and a plush knit does, so the join between them is where the garment either looks designed or looks like two garments sewn together badly.

Then there is the oversized part. An oversized rugby body puts more knit around a collar that does not move, which increases the strain at exactly the weakest join, and the plush bulk makes it worse because there is more material to fit into the collar seam. This is a garment where the sampling time belongs at the neckline and nowhere else.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The collar join is the first and it is what decides whether this garment looks right. A woven collar on a plush knit body has to absorb the difference between two fabrics that stretch differently, and with plush bulk there is more material to get into the seam, so the join will pucker if it is simply sewn and pressed. We develop the collar on the actual body cloth, manage the bulk rather than forcing it, specify the interlining, and check the collar after the care cycle, because a woven collar and a knit body shrink by different amounts.

The placket and buttons are the second. A placket on a stretch knit takes the strain of the garment being pulled on, which on an oversized rugby is considerable, so it has to be reinforced rather than topstitched, and the buttonholes have to be cut to hold a button under load rather than stretch open. Buttons are specified as components, not as trim, and we test the placket through repeated opening and closing and through washing.

Shrinkage and the plush surface are the third. Two different cloths shrinking by different amounts will twist the whole garment, and the effect is most visible at the collar and the placket. We test both cloths before cutting and compensate the pattern rather than hoping. Plush pile flattens under pressure and mats where it is rubbed, which is worst at the collar where it is handled, so we test washing and rubbing on the actual cloth and pack so the pile is not crushed.
