There is a piece of disclosure here that almost nothing else in this series has matched, an instruction that is stricter than the fibre needs for a good reason, and a chart figure that is very likely a simple transposition.

This listing says the garment is sheer, and that is worth singling out because so few do, and that is the first thing. The description states that the garment is transparent and that undergarments will show, and adds that undergarments are not included. That is two sentences, and it resolves the single most common source of disappointment in this series. We have returned to opacity on perhaps a dozen listings and the argument has always been the same: a photograph taken on a model under studio lighting cannot show whether a cloth is see through, because the lighting and the styling are arranged precisely to make the garment look its best, so the customer cannot judge it and has to rely on the maker telling her. Some listings have been honest about the construction without being honest about the consequence, which we noted on an embroidered lace bodysuit dress that was correctly described as unlined while never saying what an unlined off white lace would actually do. This one goes further. It states the consequence, it does not soften it with a euphemism, and it deals with the follow-on question of what to wear underneath by saying that the undergarment is not part of the purchase, which is a returns question as much as a styling one. It is worth saying that this is not a difficult thing to write and it is not a competitive disadvantage. A customer who is told a garment is sheer and buys it anyway is a satisfied customer, and one who is not told and discovers it is a returned garment. The other thing this listing gets right alongside it is the fabric description: lightweight mesh, which is an open structure by definition, so the composition, the construction and the disclosure all agree with each other. That coherence is rarer than it should be.

Dry clean only on 100% cotton is stricter than the fibre needs, and the embroidery is why, and that is the second thing. Cotton is among the most washable fibres in a wardrobe and we have said so throughout this series, most directly when setting out what a machine washable cotton garment requires, which is pre shrinking before cutting. So the instruction looks overcautious. It is not, and the reason is the embroidery rather than the cloth. All-over embroidery means a large proportion of the surface is covered in thread, and embroidery thread and ground fabric do not behave alike in water. Cotton thread and cotton mesh will both shrink, but they will not shrink by the same amount or at the same rate, because the thread is twisted differently and is under tension from being stitched, and the ground is an open mesh with little restraint in it. The result of washing is that the embroidery puckers the ground around it, and on a mesh, which has almost no structure of its own to resist, that shows immediately and cannot be pressed out. This is the same principle this series has applied in several forms, which is that a care instruction is set by the most fragile component rather than by the predominant fibre. We used it on a cotton twill mini whose applique made dry clean only correct, and on a wool blend whose lining and shell would shrink by different amounts. Here it is the thread against the ground. It is worth adding that the scalloped hem is part of the same argument, since a scallop is a shaped edge cut into curves, and its shape depends on the edge being finished in a way that holds, which washing tends to relax.

The hip is published smaller than the bust, and that is almost certainly not the hip, and that is the third thing. The chart gives a 38 inch bust, a 38 inch waist and a 25 inch hip. The first two being equal is easy to read and we have a rule for it from earlier in this series: a garment that measures the same at the bust and the waist cannot have any waist suppression, so it is cut straight rather than shaped, and we have found that pattern several times and said it is a shape rather than an error. A hip of 25 inches on a garment whose bust and waist are both 38 is a different matter. A hip narrower than the waist by thirteen inches is not a shape anybody cuts. The likeliest explanation is mundane, which is that the figure belongs to a different measurement: it is close to what you would expect for a hem width on one side, or for the length of a side slit, both of which this garment has. This is worth distinguishing from another kind of chart error we found recently, where a recycled polyester dress published a waist larger than its bust and a bust four inches under the model while having no stretch fibre at all, and we concluded there that one of the figures had been taken at the wrong place and that the customer would size incorrectly as a result. Here the reading is easier, because the impossible figure is impossible on its face rather than merely unlikely, and a customer will probably disregard it. The useful point is the general one: a chart row should be internally consistent before it is compared with anybody, and a customer checking a chart should glance down the row first rather than straight to the measurement she cares about. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.
