Plush Premium Graphic Raglan Hoodie: Printing On Pile

Printing onto plush is harder than printing onto a flat fleece, and it is worth being specific about why. Plush has a pile, which means the surface is not flat: it moves, it lies in different directions, and it compresses under the print head. The result is that the same artwork on plush can look softer at the edges, can shade slightly differently, and can sit into the pile in a way that changes how it feels to the hand.

The raglan sleeve adds a second consideration. A raglan has a diagonal seam from the neck to the underarm, and a graphic that crosses that seam has to be placed so it reads correctly across it, which means the placement is set by size rather than by a fixed distance from the neck. That is the kind of detail that separates a print that looks placed from a print that looks printed.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The print on pile is the first risk. Ink sits differently on a pile surface than on a flat one, and if the method is chosen as though the fabric were flat, the result is a print that looks soft edged, that cracks at the edges earlier than it should, and that feels like a film rather than part of the garment. Plush is also thicker, which changes how it cures. We choose the print method for the actual cloth rather than defaulting, control the cure for the thickness, and test wash fastness and stretch on printed samples rather than judging by eye.

Pile direction and shading are the second. Pile lies in one direction, and panels cut in different directions look like different shades on the same garment, which is obvious on a solid colour hoodie and worse under a print. We control pile direction at cutting and check shade under consistent lighting. On the raglan seam, the diagonal join means artwork has to be placed relative to the seam per size, so we set that in the tech pack rather than scaling one placement across the range.

Pile damage in washing and packing is the third. Plush flattens under pressure and mats where it is rubbed, so a hoodie that leaves the factory looking right can arrive looking flat or patchy. We test washing and rubbing on the actual cloth, approve the print after the care cycle rather than only off the machine, and pack so the pile is not crushed, which is where this fabric most often arrives damaged.
