Licensed Graphic Quarter Zip: Paperwork First, Then The Print

When a title names a character, the first question is not about fabric or fit, it is about rights. Characters belong to whoever created them, and making merchandise with them without a licence is not a grey area, it is infringement, and it puts both of us at risk. So before anything else: we need to see that you hold the licence or that you have written authorisation from the holder. Without that, the honest advice is to develop the same garment with your own artwork.

Once that is settled, the garment itself has two jobs that are harder than they look. The quarter zip placket has to lie flat in a soft fleece, which is the most common fault on this style, and the graphic has to sit on a placket that moves, which means the placement has to be set so it is not distorted when the zip is done up. Those two are related and we would develop them together rather than separately.

A note on this one: This title names a licensed character. We will not produce branded or character merchandise without documented proof of licence or written authorisation from the rights holder. The garment notes below assume that documentation is in place.

• Proof of licence or written authorisation, before sampling starts

• Print method chosen for fleece, and cured for the fabric weight

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The licence comes first and it is not negotiable. Character artwork is protected, and producing it without paperwork risks seizure of the shipment and a claim against both parties. If you cannot show the rights, we would rather you develop the same garment with your own artwork, which we can do and which leaves you in a stronger position commercially.

The placket is the second and it is the most common fault on any quarter zip. A short zip in soft fleece waves unless it is stabilised, and the two sides have to match at the top or the collar sits crooked. On a printed garment there is an extra problem: the artwork has to be placed relative to the placket so it is not distorted when the zip is closed, which we check done up rather than only open. We stabilise the placket, specify the zip and the facing, and test the garment on the body rather than flat.

The print and the collar are the third. Prints on fleece crack when the ink sits on a fabric that moves, and curing has to be controlled for the weight, so we choose the method for the cloth and test wash fastness and stretch on printed samples. Licensed artwork comes with approved colours, so strike-offs are approved against the licensor's reference rather than against a screen. The collar needs the right interlining or it collapses open and gapes closed, and we check it after the care cycle rather than only off the machine.
