Ramie is often described as a linen substitute and it is not one, and the difference matters here, and that is the first thing. Ramie is a plant fibre like linen, and it is frequently described as a cheaper or coarser version of it, which is unfair to both. The real differences are three. Ramie is stiffer and more brittle than linen, so it creases more sharply and the creases are harder to press out, and it does not soften with washing the way linen does, meaning a ramie garment feels much the same after twenty washes as it did on the first day. This garment does the opposite: it is relaxed through the upper body and fitted through the hips. That is a harder shape to make, because the eye reads a silhouette from the shoulder down, and a garment that is loose at the top and tight at the bottom has to be controlled carefully or it looks like it does not fit.
