Same maker, same composition, one different decision, and the measurements show what that decision cost, and that is the first thing. This dress and another in this series are both 77% polyamide with 23% elastane, both lightweight ruffle jersey, both made in Colombia, both offered in three combined sizes, and both by Maygel Coronel. The other one is a fit and flare with a level hem, and its measurements for the same size were a 22 inch bust, a 20 inch waist and a 36 inch hip. This one is a bodycon with an asymmetrical hem, and its measurements are a 22 inch bust, a 22 inch waist and a 28 inch hip. So the bust is identical in both, which tells you the two are cut from the same block at the top, and everything below it differs. The waist is two inches larger here and the hip is eight inches smaller. That is the whole of the difference between a fit and flare and a bodycon, expressed in numbers: the first releases at the hip by eight inches over the model's and the second holds it to within six. This series has found a bust and a waist published as the same figure several times and the reading has been consistent, which is that a garment measuring the same in both places has no waist suppression in the cut. An asymmetrical hem cannot be described by one length, and this chart tries to, and that is the second thing. The length is published as 55 inches, and the hem is asymmetrical, meaning it is cut at an angle so that it sits higher on one side than the other. A single figure cannot say where an angled hem falls, because there are two answers and they differ by the amount of the angle. It is worth adding what an angled hem does to the cloth, because it is not simply a diagonal cut. A hem cut on an angle to the grain behaves differently from one cut straight across it, because the yarns at the edge are cut at different lengths and the edge tends to stretch and ripple rather than lie flat, which is why an angled hem needs either a narrow turned finish, a facing, or a binding to hold it. This series has noted before that a shaped edge depends on its finish to hold its shape, saying the same about a scalloped hem on an embroidered mesh tunic. A ruffled hem adds to that, since a ruffle's spring comes from its cut edge and is lost if the edge is handled badly. So the hem on this garment is the most demanding part of it and the least described.

Hand wash is right, and the instruction needs one sentence added, and the unlined decision needs one too, and that is the third thing. Polyamide with elastane washes easily, dries fast, does not shrink and recovers from creasing better than most fibres, so hand wash is a reasonable instruction and is also the gentler option, which suits a lightweight cloth. What it needs is a note about the ruffles, because this series has settled on the principle that a care instruction is set by the most fragile component rather than by the predominant fibre, and used it on a cotton twill mini whose applique made dry clean only correct, and on an embroidered lace dress where the embellishment was the constraint. Here the cloth is robust and the ruffles are not. A ruffle holds its shape by the geometry of its edge rather than by anything structural, so wringing it, rubbing it, or drying it hung and wet under its own weight will flatten it, and it will not recover. The sentence to add is about drying flat rather than hung. On the lining, or the absence of one, the garment is unlined, and this series has returned to opacity many times with the rule that it should be stated plainly because a photograph cannot show it. That applies with particular force here for a reason worth spelling out: this garment compresses by about eleven inches at the bust, and a cloth that is being stretched over a larger area becomes more transparent, because the same amount of material is covering more body. So the closeness of the fit and the lightness of the cloth and the absence of a lining all push in the same direction, and the honest version of this listing says what that means rather than leaving the customer to find out.
