Quarter Zip Sweatshirt: The Placket Is The Whole Job

A quarter zip looks like less work than a full zip and is not. A full length zip has the whole garment to pull against, and it distributes its stiffness down the front. A quarter zip concentrates all of that into a short placket at the neck, on the part of the garment that is most visible and closest to the face, so any waving, any mismatch between the two sides, and any collar that does not sit flat is immediately obvious.

The collar is the second half of the same problem. A quarter zip usually has a stand collar or a folded collar, and the collar has to close neatly at the top without gaping and sit flat when the zip is open. That is a pattern and interlining question rather than a sewing one, and it is the detail that makes the difference between a sweatshirt that reads as considered and one that looks like the collar was an afterthought.

• Placket length and width, set as measurements
• Zip type and gauge, chosen for a short run in soft fabric
• Stabilisation behind the zip, which is what stops it waving
• Collar construction, stand or folded, and how it closes at the top
• Zip garage or facing at the neck, so it does not rub
• Fabric weight, since a placket needs a stable base
• Rib at cuff and hem, and its recovery
• Wash testing, because a placket distorts in washing

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The placket is the first and it is where this garment fails. A short zip sewn into soft fleece will pull the fabric into a wave unless there is stabilisation behind it, and because the placket is short and at the neck, there is nowhere to hide it. The two sides also have to match at the top, or the collar sits crooked, which is visible from the front. We stabilise the placket, specify the zip and the facing, add a garage or a facing so the puller does not rub the neck, and check the garment done up and open, on the body rather than flat.

The collar is the second. A stand collar on fleece needs the right interlining and the right shape, or it will collapse when the zip is open and gape when it is closed, and a folded collar will curl at the points after washing if the interlining and the pressing are not controlled. We specify the interlining rather than leaving it to the line, develop the collar on the actual cloth, and check it after the care cycle rather than only off the machine.

Rib, shrinkage and surface are the third. Cuff and hem rib have to recover after washing or the whole garment loses its shape, so we specify the rib rather than matching a colour, and we test recovery on repeated cycles. Shrinkage distorts a placket and a collar faster than it changes a body measurement, so we test on the actual cloth before cutting and compensate the pattern. On the surface, the brushed face of a fleece is where pilling shows first and it is most visible on the chest, which is exactly where this garment is looked at.
