There are three written reviews and eleven fit votes on this listing, and together they are the most useful customer feedback in this series. What they say is not flattering, and there is a technical reason for it.

Eleven votes with no agreement is a finding and not noise, and that is the first thing, and it needs saying because it looks like the opposite. We have been dismissive of small samples throughout this series, and specifically of samples that disagree: we said of a midi dress with two votes split evenly that an even split looks like information and is not, and that with two votes pointing opposite ways you have learned nothing about which way a garment runs. Eleven votes in roughly equal measure between true to size and large, with a few saying small, is a different situation entirely. It is not a small sample, and the disagreement is not noise, because there is enough of it to be sure the disagreement is real. What a result like this tells you is that the garment does not have one answer. Some bodies it fits as the chart says, some it is too big on, and the split is close enough to even that no size advice can be right for everybody. That is a property of the garment rather than of the sample. And it usually has a cause, which is that the garment is cut in a way that depends on the wearer's proportions rather than only on her measurements, so two people who measure the same get different results. We would treat this as a design problem to be solved rather than a sizing problem to be adjusted, and the reviews say what the problem is.

Two opposite body types describe the same failure, which means the garment is at fault, and that is the second thing, and it is the most useful single inference in this whole series. Read the first two reviews together. The first says she read the other reviews, that all the shorter customers said it looked like a sack on them, that she is five foot eleven and thought she would try anyway, that it still looks like a sack on her, and that she is curvier in the hips. The second says it is not a good dress for those with small hips who are short and fit, and that it looked like a rubbish bag. Now notice what those two have in common and what they do not. They do not share a body type: one describes herself as curvier in the hips, the other says it does not suit small hips, and they are different heights. They do share a description of the failure, and it is the same image twice: a sack, a bag. So when two people at opposite ends of a range of body types produce the same complaint in the same words, the problem is not that the garment suits one shape and not another. It is that the garment does not hold a shape on anybody. That is a completely different fault and it is worth knowing how to tell them apart, because the fixes are opposite. If a garment suits one shape and not another, you adjust the pattern or add sizes. If a garment holds no shape on anyone, the pattern is not the problem at all, and the fault is in the cloth or in how the shaping is achieved. Here it is the latter, and the first reviewer puts her finger on it without knowing she has: she says she wishes they made another style in the same fabric because she loved it. The fabric was fine. The dress was not.

Ninety two per cent viscose is why the gather does not hold, and that is the third thing, and it is the technical explanation for what both customers described. A gathered waist works by drawing up more cloth than the body needs at that point and holding it there, so the surplus falls in folds and the eye reads a waist. For that to work the cloth has to do two things at once: it has to be limber enough to fall in soft folds, and it has to be heavy enough for those folds to hang rather than spread. Viscose is exceptionally good at the first and bad at the second in a specific way. It is a heavy fibre for its weight in the hand and it drapes beautifully, which is why it is chosen, but it has very little spring, meaning it does not push back into a shape once it has been pulled out of one. So a gathered waist in viscose starts the day as folds and ends it as a tube, because gravity does the work and nothing resists it. Eight per cent elastane improves recovery, meaning it helps cloth spring back rather than stay stretched, but it does not add stiffness, and stiffness is what holding a shape requires. That is the gap. A gathered waist in a cloth with more body, or one where the gather is anchored to something that does not move, holds its folds all evening. This one does not, and two customers independently used the same word for the result. Our recommendation is either to put the gather onto a separate band or elastic so it does not depend on the cloth holding a shape, or to move to a cloth with more body in it, and we would test it on a body over several hours rather than on a hanger, because this fault appears with wear and never shows in a fitting.

The third review is about a stain and it says something important, and that is the last thing. The reviewer says the dress arrived with deodorant marks on it, goes out of her way to say she is not blaming the brand and that there is nothing wrong with the dress, and is simply letting people know. Taken alone it is a comment about one returned item. Taken with the other two it is evidence of something else, because a garment arrives with deodorant marks on it for one reason: somebody wore it and sent it back, and it was put back into stock rather than being dealt with. That means returns are running at a volume where this happens often enough to be noticed by a customer. And that is consistent with everything else on the page: eleven fit votes with no agreement, two reviews describing the same failure in the same words, and one of those reviewers saying she is sad to be sending it back. High returns, split fit votes and a shape that does not hold are all the same problem seen from three directions.
