Licensed Graphic Hoodies: What We Need From You Before We Make One
A hoodie carrying a character, a show or a music artist is a licensing question before it is a manufacturing one, and we would rather say that plainly than quote for something that should not be made. Names like Gilmore Girls belong to whoever owns them, and producing them without a licence is not something we will do, both because it is illegal and because it puts you at risk of having a shipment seized. So the first thing we ask for is proof that you hold the rights, or that you are producing under a licence from the holder.
Where you do hold the rights, the garment underneath is a normal oversized hoodie and the print is the whole job. A large character graphic sits on fleece, which is a textured and slightly stretchy base, and that is the combination that cracks and that shades badly. The interesting engineering is in the print, not in the sewing, so that is where we would put the development time.
A note on this one: This title names a television property. We cannot and will not produce branded or character merchandise without documented proof that you hold the licence or a written authorisation from the rights holder. Everything below describes the garment and the print work, and assumes that paperwork is in place.
What Has To Be Specified
- Proof of licence, which is the first thing we ask for and not optional
- Print method, chosen for the artwork and for how it will be washed
- Print hand and stretch, since fleece moves under the ink
- Colour matching to the licensed artwork, usually against approved references
- Placement and size, set so the graphic sits correctly on an oversized body
- Fabric weight, because a graphic needs a stable base
- Wash testing, since cracking is the failure mode for prints
- Approval against the licensor's artwork rather than a screen

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production
The licence is the first thing and there is no way round it. Character, show and artist names are protected, and a factory that produces them without paperwork exposes both itself and its customer to seizure and to a claim. We ask for the documentation before we cut a sample, and if it cannot be shown, the honest answer is to develop the same garment with your own artwork instead, which we can do and which is a better commercial position anyway.
The print is the second and it is where licensed hoodies fail. A large graphic on fleece has to survive washing without cracking, and cracking comes from the ink sitting on top of a fabric that moves rather than moving with it, and from curing that is not controlled. We choose the print method for the artwork and the fabric rather than defaulting to the cheapest, control the cure, and test wash fastness and stretch on the actual printed cloth rather than judging by eye.
Colour and placement are the third. Licensed artwork comes with approved colours, and a print that is close is not the same as a print that is approved, particularly on fleece where the base shade shifts the result. We approve strike-offs against the reference you or the licensor provide, not against a screen, and we check the placement on an oversized body so the graphic sits where it was designed to at every size rather than only on the sample size.
Options We Can Build To
- Fabric: brushed back fleece, loopback French terry, heavier or lighter weights, organic or BCI cotton
- Body: how oversized, the shoulder drop, and hood depth
- Print: screen, water based, discharge, puff, or digital transfer
- Artwork: your own, or licensed artwork with the paperwork in place
- Placement: centre chest, oversized front, back, or sleeve
- Wash: enzyme wash, garment dye, silicon wash, or raw
- Trims: drawcord, eyelets, tips, and rib composition
- Branding: woven label, printed label, and placement, subject to licence terms
Optional upgrades include certified organic or recycled fibre with documentation, a defined weight and construction with testing reports, licensed artwork colour approval and strike-offs, custom print development, wash testing documentation, extended sizing, and private label with hangtag and care labelling.
Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
