The published size 2 gives a 30 inch bust, a 27 inch waist, a 35 inch hip and a 31 inch length against a model at 34, 24 and 34. The waist and hip have ease and the bust is four inches under. Denim has essentially no stretch, so that four inches is real rather than nominal, and we would confirm it on a fit model. It is not necessarily wrong, because a fitted denim dress is meant to be snug, but it is not a figure that can be adjusted later.

Cotton with a polyester lining is the most common mismatch there is, and here the care instruction is what keeps it from mattering, and that is the first thing. We have argued throughout this series that a lining should match the fibre of its shell, and the reason is that different fibres shrink by different amounts: put a shell and a lining of different fibres through water and they come out different sizes, and the lining then no longer sits flat inside the garment. Cotton and polyester are the widest spread version of this, because cotton shrinks appreciably and polyester barely shrinks at all. So on the face of it this is the wrong pairing. But the instruction is dry clean only, and dry cleaning does not involve water, so the shrinkage never happens and the mismatch never fires. That is a real solution rather than a lucky escape, and it deserves credit. Now the part that makes it fragile. This garment looks like a denim dress, and a denim dress is the single most washable-looking object in a wardrobe. A customer who sees cotton denim and a dry clean only label will quite reasonably think the label is cautious rather than necessary, put it in the machine, and then find out exactly why the pairing was a problem in the first place. So the instruction is correct and it is also likely to be ignored, and we would handle that by saying why on the page rather than just saying what, or better still by matching the lining to the shell so the garment becomes robust to being washed whether or not the customer reads.

Three dimensional embellishment and a flat pack is the second thing, and it is one of those problems that is invisible until a container arrives. Three dimensional flowers stand proud of the fabric. That is the entire point of them and it is also what makes them fragile, because anything that presses on them flattens them, and a garment folded and stacked in a carton has the weight of the carton pressing on it for the whole journey. What arrives is a dress with flowers that have been squashed to one side, and unlike a crease this does not come out, because the shape was set into the pieces rather than pressed into the cloth. So this is a packing specification rather than a design one, and it belongs in the tech pack alongside the measurements: either hang the garment, or build a collar or a filler around the embellished area so nothing bears on it, or pack it flat with the embellishment facing up and nothing on top. We would also say how many units go in a carton, because that is where the load comes from. It is worth adding that three dimensional work is hand finishing, so it does not scale the way cut and sew does, and a heavily embellished sample takes considerably longer to produce than a plain one. Plan the calendar around that rather than discovering it.

Heavyweight cloth in a sleeveless shape is the third thing. Denim at this weight is a stiff, substantial cloth with little drape, and a sleeveless garment is one where the armhole has to follow the curve of the body closely, because there is no sleeve to disguise a gap. Those two facts are in tension. A stiff cloth does not want to curve into an armhole, so it stands away, and the result is an armhole that gapes open at the side of the chest. This is a known and common fault on heavy fabrics cut sleeveless, and it is worth testing arms down and arms raised rather than only arms down, because a gap that is invisible with the arms at her side can open noticeably once she moves. The fixes are to shape the armhole more deeply, to add a small dart or a hidden snap, or to use a slightly lighter cloth. On the fit more generally: denim has no elastane here and essentially no give, so the published bust being four inches under the model's own is a real four inches rather than a nominal one, and a denim garment will not stretch to meet the body the way a knit will.
