There are no reviews and no fit votes on this listing, so there is no score to quote. There is a distinction about where stretch comes from that is worth stating clearly, and a construction question about strapless garments that this particular gown makes unusually acute.
A knit stretches because of how it is built, not because of what it is made of, and that is the first thing and the reason these measurements are not a mistake. Every previous garment where we have accepted a very tight measurement has had elastane in it. There was a silk dress at 28% elastane, which is a compression cloth with genuine power, and two lace garments at 19%, which we accepted and which two separate listings corroborated by giving the same size advice. This has none. And yet the bust, waist and hip are all published smaller than the model, by six, two and eight inches respectively. The explanation is that this is a ribbed jersey, and a knit does not get its stretch from its fibre content in the way a woven cloth would have to. A knit is made of interlocking loops, and a loop can open: pull on a jersey and the loops deform and the cloth gets larger, and let go and they close again. That is structural stretch, and it exists whether or not there is any elastane in the yarn. Rib structures stretch considerably more than plain jersey, because of how the face and back loops are arranged, which is why a rib is used for cuffs and for anything that has to grip. So this garment has a real mechanism, and we would not reject the pattern. It is worth noting that there are three mechanisms operating at once here: the knit, the ruching at the side, and the pull-on construction with no zip at all. Any one of them would explain some of the ease, and together they explain a great deal. It also explains something else on the page that looks like an omission but is not: this is offered in only three sizes. A knit on a body accommodates more shapes than a woven cloth does, so three sizes is a defensible size set here in a way it would not be on a dress made of a woven fabric.
What holds a strapless floor length gown up is the second thing, and it is the one we would actually spend engineering time on. A strapless garment has nothing over the shoulders, so it can only stay up by gripping the body, and there are two ways to achieve that: either it is built with structure, meaning boning or an internal corselet or a silicone band along the top edge, or it is held by the tension of a stretch cloth pulling against the ribcage. This one is unlined and pull-on, so it is the second of those, and a ribbed jersey gripping the ribcage is a genuine mechanism. But now look at the length, which is 70 inches. That is a great deal of cloth hanging below the grip, and cloth has weight, and all of that weight is pulling downward on the one place that is holding the garment up. So the failure mode here is not dramatic, it is gradual: the gown slides down a little, and she adjusts it, and it slides again, and she spends the evening hitching at it. Two things make that worse over time rather than better. Viscose is a fibre that loses strength when wet, and hand washing is correctly specified here for that reason, but it also means the cloth is at its most vulnerable every time it is washed. And a knit without elastane recovers less well than one with it, so the grip at the top edge relaxes with wear rather than being restored by it. Our recommendation is a silicone band along the inside of the top edge, which is cheap, invisible, and changes the whole picture, because it grips skin rather than relying on cloth tension. If you prefer a structural answer, a short corselet or a few bones at the side seams does the same job, and either can be added without changing how the gown looks.
Viscose and water is the last thing, and it is worth being specific because it is a fibre with an unusual property. Viscose loses a great deal of its strength when it is wet, on the order of half, which means a wet viscose garment is far easier to damage than a dry one and will distort under its own weight if it is handled carelessly. Hand wash is therefore the right instruction, and we would not change it. But the instruction alone is not enough, because the damage is caused by what happens next. Wringing a wet viscose gown will put creases and distortion into it that do not wash out, because the fibre is at its weakest precisely when it is being twisted. So the care label should say what to do as well as what not to: press the water out rather than wringing, and dry flat rather than hanging, because a floor length gown hung up wet will stretch under its own weight and come out longer than it went in.
