That second sentence is the part most listings miss, and it solves a separate and entirely predictable problem, which is that a customer sees the garment photographed over a slip or a bralette and assumes it comes with the garment. We have spent a great deal of this series arguing that saying a garment is sheer costs nothing and prevents returns, and this is the most complete version of that we have seen. The second thing is that the listing advises sizing down, and here the composition tells you exactly why, which is a satisfying piece of evidence because the two facts explain each other. The sheerness note is the first thing, and it is the best one we have seen. The listing says the garment is transparent and that underwear will be visible through it. That alone puts it ahead of most of what we have covered, and we have made the point repeatedly that saying this costs nothing on the page and prevents the returns that follow when a customer discovers it herself. But the part we want to draw attention to is the second sentence, which says that underwear is not included. That solves a completely different problem that most brands do not realise they have. When a sheer garment is photographed, it is photographed over something, and the customer looking at the photograph assumes the something comes with it. So she receives a garment she cannot wear, and she is annoyed, and the brand's own photography is what misled her. Adding one sentence removes that. It is worth noting that this is the second listing from this brand in this series where the copy is unusually clear about what the customer is actually getting, which suggests it is a deliberate policy rather than an accident, and it is a cheap policy to adopt.

The composition is 81% nylon with 19% elastane, and 19% is a high figure: it is comfortably into the range where a cloth has real power rather than a little give, which we discussed on another garment in this series at 28%. Now look at the measurements. The bust is 36 against a model at 34, so about two inches of ease, and the waist and hip are within an inch or two of hers. On paper that is a garment that should fit her in her usual size. But the listing says it runs large and recommends sizing down. Those two statements are not in conflict, and the composition is the reason. A cloth at 19% elastane does not sit at its flat measurement once it is on a body: it opens, and it keeps opening, and because it has power it will happily stretch well past the two inches the chart suggests. So the garment in her usual size will be looser than the chart implies, and the advice follows directly. This is the correct version of a thing we have seen done wrongly in this series, where a listing advised sizing up and half the customers reported it running large. That advice was a habit. This one is a derivation from what the garment actually is.

Machine washable with no temperature given is the third thing, and it is the one inconsistency we would fix. Machine washable is excellent news on a lace garment and it is right for the fibre, since nylon and elastane both tolerate water and agitation far better than the cellulosics and the silks we have mostly been dealing with. But elastane has one specific enemy, which is heat, and heat is exactly what a washing machine can supply if you do not tell it not to. Note that another garment from this same brand in this group specifies machine wash cold, so the brand knows this. Here the temperature is simply missing. We would put cold on it, because a customer who washes this warm will not damage the nylon but will steadily destroy the recovery of the elastane, and the failure will not look like damage: the garment will simply stop holding its shape and start to sag at the places that stretch most.

A deep V in a high stretch cloth is the last thing, and it is worth comparing with another garment in this series because the comparison gives you a rule. We covered a halter maxi with a deep V and a pull-on closure, made in a heavyweight crepe with 4% elastane, and there we flagged a genuine tension: a pull-on garment needs ease to get over the body, but a deep V needs to lie close to the chest or it gapes open when the wearer leans forward, and 4% elastane was being asked to serve both and probably could not. Here the same neckline is not a problem at all, and the reason is 19% elastane. A cloth with that much power holds the V against the chest as a matter of course, so the gape that would need engineering at 4% simply does not arise at 19%. The rule worth taking away is that the difficulty of a neckline is a function of the cloth, not of the drawing.
