Plush Boyfriend Jogger: Relaxed, But Not Sloppy

A boyfriend jogger is a relaxed straight leg with a ribbed hem, and the whole difficulty is in the word relaxed. Relaxed means there is ease through the hip and thigh, not that the pattern is bigger. If you simply size a slim jogger up, you get a garment that is loose in the wrong places and tight where it should not be, and on a plush fabric that reads as sloppy rather than easy.

The rib at the hem is what makes it a jogger rather than a sweatpant, and it is also where the garment fails. The rib has to gather the leg without gripping the ankle, it has to recover after washing rather than flaring, and on a plush cloth it has to be matched in shade and in hand. Rib is the cheapest component on the garment and the one that decides whether it looks finished.

• Ease through hip and thigh, set as a measurement rather than by sizing up
• Rise, which decides whether it sits properly rather than sliding
• Rib hem width and recovery, which makes it a jogger
• Plush pile direction, controlled at cutting
• Waistband and drawcord, which carries the garment
• Pocket placement, since a relaxed leg puts more load on pockets
• Shrinkage, which changes the length and the rib gather
• Wash and pack testing, because plush pile is fragile

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The rib is the first and it is what turns a jogger into a sweatpant if it goes wrong. Rib that is too tight grips the ankle, rib that loses its recovery flares after a few washes, and rib that does not match the shell in shade looks like a mistake even when it fits. On plush the rib also has to feel right against the pile. We specify the rib by composition and by how it is knitted rather than by colour alone, match it to the shell in shade and hand, and test recovery after repeated washing rather than only looking at the garment new.

Plush is the second. The pile is what makes the fabric and the pile is what fails: it flattens under pressure, it mats where it is rubbed, and it shades differently depending on which way it lies, so panels cut in different directions can look like different colours on the same garment. We control pile direction at the cutting stage, test washing and rubbing on the actual cloth, and pack so the pile is not crushed, because arriving flat is the most common complaint about plush.

Fit, shrinkage and the waist are the third. Relaxed has to be a defined amount of ease, set in the tech pack, or a large size ends up shapeless. Shrinkage shortens the leg and changes how the rib gathers, so we test on the actual cloth and compensate the pattern before cutting, and we check the leg on the body rather than flat. The waistband carries a heavier garment than a slim jogger, so the elastic is specified and the drawcord eyelets are reinforced.
