The published size S gives a 20 inch bust, a 20 inch waist, a 34 inch hip and a 51 inch length against a model at roughly 33, 24 and 35. The bust and waist are the same figure, which means the shape is straight. Both are also far below the model, and we have now met that situation often enough to say plainly that we would measure this ourselves rather than work from the published figure.

There are no reviews and no fit votes on this listing, so there is no score to quote. There is a measurement that repeats for the third time, a word in the care instruction that is doing real work, and a mechanical problem with the hardware.

The bust and the waist are the same number for the third time, and the shape answer is always the same while the size answer never is, and that is the first thing. We have met this exact arithmetic twice. On a strapless tube mini, the bust and waist were both published at 19 inches against a model at 34 and 24, and we concluded two things: that the equality told us the garment was an unshaped tube with no waist suppression, which is what a bustier is, and that the smallness told us the figure was probably a flat half measurement rather than a circumference. On a long sleeve satin mini, both were published at 36 against a model at 34 and 23, and there the same equality told us the same thing about the shape, a straight column, while the size of the number told us something quite different, that the fit was generous. This is the third: both at 20 against a model at 33 and 24. So the shape conclusion is now reliable and worth stating as a rule: when the bust and the waist are published as the same figure, the garment has no waist suppression, because a garment that comes in at the waist cannot measure the same in both places. What the number itself means is a separate question and has to be worked out each time, and here we would apply the same test we applied to the tube mini. This is a midweight knit with no elastane, it is filed under bodycon, and a 20 inch circumference is not going onto a 33 inch bust. Either the figure is a flat half measurement, in which case the true circumference is about 40 inches and everything is comfortable, or the garment is very tight indeed. Given the hips are published at 34, which is very close to the model's own, the half measurement reading is the more likely of the two. We would measure it and find out rather than guess.

Professional dry clean is stricter than dry clean and the hardware is why, and that is the second thing. We have collected a great many care instructions in this series and argued that several are stricter than they need to be. This one has a reason. The word professional is doing work: it distinguishes a specialist cleaner from an ordinary one, and the thing that needs a specialist here is the gold-tone hardware. Metal fittings in a dry cleaning bath have two problems. The first is the solvent itself, which can dull a plated finish or attack a coating, and hardware is often plated rather than solid. The second is that a cleaning bath tumbles the garment, and hardware is heavier and harder than the cloth around it, so it is both abraded itself and abrasive to everything it knocks against. A professional cleaner will protect or remove the hardware, or clean around it, where an ordinary one will put the garment in the machine. That is worth knowing and it is worth saying on the label, because a customer who takes this to a high street cleaner and gets it back with dulled hardware will blame the dress rather than the process. There is a second reason the instruction is strict, which is the cloth, since 60% viscose loses a large part of its strength when wet and will distort under its own weight in water. So dry cleaning is right and the professional qualifier is justified. We would keep both words.

Hardware on a knit tears it, and that is the third thing, and it is a mechanical problem that a fitting will not reveal. A fitting passes through the cloth, and on a knit it passes between the loops, which means the hole it makes has no structure holding it: pull on it and the loops simply open and the hole gets bigger. Now add load. Hardware on a garment is usually doing something, holding a cut-out edge, joining two parts, taking a strap, and so it is under tension almost all the time it is worn. Under tension, a hole in a knit migrates, meaning it slowly works its way larger as the loops around it are pulled open one at a time, and the failure is not a dramatic tear but a gradual one that ends with the fitting pulling through. We raised a version of this on a one shoulder silk gown, where we said an adjuster concentrates the load of the garment onto a few millimetres of cloth and should have a reinforcement behind it so the load spreads rather than sitting on a line. The same applies here, and more so, because this garment has hardware as a feature rather than as a necessity, so there is more of it and it is in more places, and because the cut-outs mean the cloth around each fitting has less material in it to begin with. We would specify a washer or a reinforcement patch behind every piece of hardware, and we would test by hanging weight from the fittings rather than by looking at the garment on a hanger, because this failure takes time and load and neither is present in a showroom. One last point on the cut-outs themselves: this is unlined and the retailer files it under bodycon, and we made the point recently about another bodycon gown that a sheer or open cloth behaves completely differently on a body that it clings to, because there is nothing between the cloth and the skin to soften what shows. Cut-outs are deliberate rather than accidental, so this is not a fault, but it does mean the customer needs to know where they fall and what she wears beneath them. We would photograph it on a body and say what is underneath. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.
