One size can mean two opposite things and this page does not say which, and that is the first thing. We looked recently at another garment offered in a single size, a button through shirt dress at 242 dollars, and there we argued that one size is informative because it tells you what kind of garment it is: a garment offered in one size has given up on fitting anybody in particular, so it can only work if it does not need to fit, which in that case was achieved by a loose shape and a placket running to the hem so it could be put on like a coat and never had to pass over the body. That is a design decision, and a coherent one. This is the opposite. A designer dress numbered 42 is not a garment designed to fit everyone. It is a garment of which one size remains. The two look identical in a size selector and they are not remotely the same thing, and the difference matters to the customer in a specific way: if it is a design decision, she can buy with confidence that it will hang as intended on her, and if it is a stock situation, she is buying the last one and should know that what she really needs to know is whether it fits her, which she cannot find out because no measurements are published. We would always say which it is. One further observation on how this listing is built: it has two photographs, no measurements, no model measurements, no care instruction, no second category and no rank. That is not how a brand presents a current season garment at full price. It is how a reseller presents a single piece of stock. The manufacturer style number is in a designer's format, which supports that reading. None of this makes it a bad buy, but a customer spending this much should know she is looking at one available unit rather than at a size range.
Silk with no care instruction is the second thing, and silk is the fibre that can least afford to have one missing. We havesaid a great deal in this series about how care instructions are decided, and the general principle has been that an instruction is set by the fibre and the construction together, and that any instruction stricter than it needs to be is a cost the customer pays. This is the opposite failure: no instruction at all, on the fibre with the most to lose. Silk takes badly to water in several ways at once. It can shrink. It can lose its lustre, which is the entire reason for buying it. It can develop water marks that do not come out, because the fibre absorbs unevenly and dries with tide lines. And the finishes that give silk its hand and its weight are often water soluble, so washing can leave it limp and changed in a way that no pressing restores. Heat is nearly as bad, since silk scorches and yellows. So a garment described only as silk, with no instruction, is a garment where the most likely outcome is that somebody ruins it through no fault of her own, and at this price that is a serious consequence. We would state dry clean only, which is unambiguous and which nobody misreads, and we would add that it should be pressed on the reverse with a cloth and never with a hot dry iron. It is also worth noting what else the composition does not say. Silk is a family rather than a material: there are different weaves with very different weights and behaviours, and there is no indication here which this is, nor whether there is any elastane in it, nor what the lining is if there is one. A garment at this price deserves a composition that can be checked.
The price and the information are inversely related, and that is the last thing, and it is worth stating because this series has now produced a clean example of it. The most expensive garment we have covered tells you that it is silk, that it was made in Italy, and that it is a size 42. That is the whole of what it tells you. Compare it with the cheapest garment we have covered, a cotton slip at 98 dollars, which gave its composition as 100% organic cotton, gave measurements for a named size, gave the model's measurements and the size she wore, stated plainly that the garment was semi-sheer and that underwear would be visible, gave a care instruction, and carried a rank. The cheap garment gave perhaps eight facts and the expensive one gave three. We have made this point several times in different forms: on a gown whose name meant translucent but whose page never said so, and on a backless dress where the retailer knew and did not write it down, and on a shirt dress where the description was prose because a specification can be checked and prose cannot. The conclusion across all of them is the same. The amount of information on a page has nothing to do with the price of the garment and everything to do with whether whoever wrote it thought the customer needed to know.
