Active Raglan Zip Through Hoodie: Made For Movement, Not For Standing Still

An active hoodie is specified differently from a lounge hoodie, and it is worth being clear which one is being made. Lounge is judged on how it feels when you put it on. Active is judged on what happens when you move in it and after you have washed it twenty times. That means seam strength at the underarm and the raglan join, a zip that behaves when the body is stretched, and fabric that recovers rather than bagging.

The raglan is a good choice for this, because removing the shoulder seam removes the seam most likely to be stressed by arm movement. What replaces it is a diagonal seam that runs right through the area that moves most, so it has to be sewn to stretch with the fabric rather than against it, which is a different specification from a raglan on a lounge hoodie.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

Seams in motion are the first and they are where active garments fail. A raglan seam runs through the area that moves most, and if it is sewn as though the garment were going to be worn standing still, it will not stretch with the body and it will fail at the stitch. We specify stretch seams at the raglan and the underarm, test seam strength on the actual cloth, and check the garment in movement rather than on a hanger.

The zip and the hood are the second. A zip in a garment that is being stretched behaves differently from one in a relaxed hoodie, so it is tested under load rather than flat, and the placket is stabilised so it does not wave when the body moves. The hood has to stay put in movement rather than falling back the moment someone bends, which is a balance question and it is checked moving rather than standing.

Recovery, washing and abrasion are the third. An active garment that bags at the elbow after an hour is not fit for purpose, so we test recovery rather than just stretch. It is also washed far more often than loungewear, so we test to more cycles, check that the hand survives, and test pilling and abrasion on the actual cloth, because active garments rub more than anything else in a wardrobe.
