Artist Collaboration Plush Crew: Written Permission Before We Cut

A named collaboration is a legal agreement before it is a garment, and it is worth saying that at the start. The artist or studio owns their work, and producing merchandise under their name without written permission is infringement. We ask for that permission before we sample, because the cost of getting it wrong is a seized shipment, not a remake. Where the paperwork exists, this is a straightforward garment and an enjoyable one to make.

The garment is a plush crew, which is the simplest shape there is and therefore the most exposed. With no print detail to distract, everything shows: the neck rib, the evenness of the pile, the shoulder line and the hem. A collaboration is usually a premium product, which means the standard it gets held to is higher than for a plain crew.

A note on this one: This title names an artist or studio. We will not produce collaboration merchandise without written permission from the rights holder. The garment notes below assume that documentation is in place.

• Wash testing, since plush pile is the fragile part

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

Permission is the first and there is no substitute for it. An artist's name and work are protected, and producing merchandise without written permission risks seizure and a claim against both of us. Where it cannot be shown, the honest alternative is the same garment with your own artwork or plain, which we can develop and which leaves you in a stronger position.

The neck rib and the pile are the second, and on a plain garment they are what gets looked at. Rib has to sit flat, recover after washing and match the shell in shade and hand, which is harder on plush than on a flat fleece. Pile lies in a direction and panels cut differently shade differently, so we control direction at cutting and check shade under consistent light rather than under whatever is in the room.

Consistency and washing are the third. A collaboration is usually a limited run that customers compare against each other, so shade, hand and weight have to hold between batches and we keep references from the approved run. Plush mats and flattens, so we test washing and rubbing on the actual cloth and pack so the pile is not crushed, because a premium garment that arrives flat is worse than a cheap one that arrives flat.
