Active Relaxed Sweatpant: Loose Enough To Move, Tight Enough To Stay

A relaxed pant worn for activity has one job that a lounge pant does not: it has to stay out of the way. Loose is good, but loose in the wrong place catches, rides or drags, and on a garment worn for movement that is worse than being slightly fitted. So the ease has to be placed deliberately, in the thigh and the seat, rather than added everywhere.

The waistband is the other half. A relaxed pant is heavier than a fitted one and it is being worn while bending and stretching, so the band has to hold through movement without rolling, and it has to survive being washed often. That is a specification rather than a choice of elastic, and it is where we would put the testing.

What Has To Be Specified

• Ease placed in the thigh and seat rather than added everywhere
• Waistband specified for movement and for frequent washing
• Seam strength at the crotch and the inseam
• Leg shape that does not catch or drag
• Hem, ribbed or open, and how it behaves in motion
• Fabric recovery, so it does not bag at the knee
• Shrinkage, since active garments are washed often
• Wash testing to more cycles than a lounge pant

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

Ease and leg shape are the first. Ease added everywhere rather than placed produces a pant that catches and drags when moving, which is worse than a slightly fitted one. We set the ease as a measurement through the thigh and the seat, check the leg shape in motion rather than standing, and make sure the hem does not drag or catch, which is the difference between a pant you can move in and one you cannot.

The waistband and seams are the second. A relaxed pant is heavier and it is moving, so the band has to hold without rolling and the crotch and inseam seams take more load than on a lounge pant. We specify the band and its elastic rather than assuming, reinforce the drawcord eyelets, and test seam strength on the actual cloth rather than judging by eye.

Recovery, washing and shrinkage are the third. A loose leg bags at the knee if the fabric does not recover, so we test recovery rather than just stretch and specify elastane where it is needed. Active garments are washed often, so we test to more cycles than for loungewear, check the hand survives, and test shrinkage before cutting and compensate the pattern, because a pant that changes length in the wash is a pant that no longer fits.
