Balloon Sweatpant: Volume Has To Come From The Pattern

A balloon pant is a leg that is full through the thigh and then gathered back in at the hem, and the important thing is where the volume comes from. If it comes from the pattern, the leg falls into a rounded shape and then gathers cleanly. If it comes from simply adding width and pulling it in with rib, the result is a leg that bunches rather than balloons, and it looks like a mistake rather than a shape.

The hem is where that shows. It has to gather enough to create the shape and not so much that it grips the ankle, and the rib or elastic doing the gathering has to be specified rather than chosen by eye. On fleece, which has bulk, the gather has more material to deal with than it would on a woven, so this is the part worth sampling twice.

What Has To Be Specified

• Volume from the pattern rather than from gathering a wide leg
• Hem gather, and how much the rib or elastic takes in
• Hem circumference, set in centimetres
• Where the fullness starts, cut rather than forced
• Fabric weight, since a gathered hem needs the cloth to fall
• Waistband, which carries more fabric than on a straight leg
• Shrinkage, which changes both the length and the gather
• Wash testing, since the hem is what changes first

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The shape is the first and it is a pattern question. Volume that is added as width and then pulled in with rib produces a leg that bunches rather than balloons, and the difference is obvious once the garment is worn. We develop the fullness in the pattern, set where it starts and how much there is as measurements, and check the shape on the body rather than on a hanger, because a balloon leg that reads well flat often does not fall correctly.

The hem gather is the second. It has to take in enough fabric to make the shape and not so much that it grips the ankle, which is a measurement rather than a judgement, and the rib or elastic doing the work has to be specified and to recover after washing. On fleece there is more bulk to gather than on a woven. We set the circumference in centimetres, specify the rib by composition, and test recovery over repeated cycles rather than only when new.

Shrinkage, waistband and twist are the third. Shrinkage shortens the leg and tightens the gather together, which changes the whole shape, so we test on the actual cloth and compensate before cutting. The waistband carries more fabric than on a straight leg, so its elastic is specified and the drawcord eyelets reinforced. A full leg will twist if it is not cut to the grain, so we check the leg hanging on the body rather than pressed flat.
