Retro Sporty Long Short: A Longer Leg Worn For Sport

A retro sporty short sits between a lounge short and a training short, and the useful thing to be clear about at the start is which it is meant to be. If it is worn for actual sport, the seams, the waistband and the fabric recovery have to be specified for movement, and the garment has to survive being washed often. If it is worn for the look, comfort and drape matter more and durability matters less. Those are different specifications with the same name.

The length is the other decision, and it is worth stating in centimetres rather than as a style. Retro long shorts vary from mid thigh to just above the knee, and that range is large enough that two people using the word will not be describing the same garment.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

Intended use is the first and it drives everything else. A short worn for running or training needs seam strength at the crotch, a waistband that holds through movement and a fabric that recovers rather than bagging, and it will be washed far more often. A short worn for the look needs drape and comfort instead. We would rather you tell us which it is than guess, because the two specifications are genuinely different and the wrong one shows up quickly in use.

Length and leg opening are the second. Inseam is set in centimetres and graded by size rather than held constant, because the same inseam on a larger size lands somewhere else. The leg opening has to sit without gripping in motion, so it is checked moving rather than measured flat, and on a longer short this is the difference between comfortable and annoying.

Recovery, shrinkage and washing are the third. A longer leg has more length to bag at the knee if the fabric does not recover, so we test recovery rather than just stretch, and specify elastane where it is needed. Shrinkage changes the inseam measurably, so we test on the actual cloth and compensate before cutting. Sportswear is washed often, so we test to more cycles than for a lounge garment and check the pile or brushed face for matting.
