Dolphin Hem Micro Mini Short: The Curve At The Leg Has To Be Even

A dolphin hem is a curved leg opening that rises at the outside, and it has one requirement that sounds trivial and is not: both legs have to match. A curve that is a few millimetres different between left and right is immediately visible on a short, and it is the kind of thing a customer sees without being able to name it. That makes it a cutting and a pattern control issue rather than a sewing one.

The second requirement is that the hem finish has to follow the curve. A turned hem on a tight curve will pull and pucker unless it is cut and sewn for the curve rather than turned as though it were straight, and on a micro short the curve is tight relative to the size of the garment, which makes it worse.

• Left and right curves matched, checked as a pair
• Hem finish that follows the curve without puckering
• Leg opening circumference, set in centimetres
• Rise front and back, checked seated
• Inseam, which on a micro short is a few centimetres
• Fabric weight and recovery, so the curve holds
• Shrinkage, which changes both the curve and the rise
• Wash testing, since the hem is what changes first

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

Symmetry is the first and it is the specific fault of this hem. Two legs that do not match are visible on a short in a way they would not be on a long garment, and it comes from cutting and from how the hem is sewn rather than from the pattern being wrong. We control the cut, check the two legs as a pair rather than individually, and set the curve as a measurement so it is repeatable between runs.

The hem finish is the second. A turned hem on a tight curve pulls and puckers if it is handled as though it were straight, and on a micro short the curve is tight relative to the garment. We specify the finish for the curve, test it on the actual cloth, and check the hem on the body rather than flat, because a curve that lies flat on a table often does not sit right when worn.

Fit, shrinkage and rise are the third. A micro short is judged in motion, so the rise is checked seated and the leg opening is checked for grip and gaping rather than only measured. Shrinkage changes the inseam, the rise and the curve, all of which are small numbers on this garment, so we test on the actual cloth and compensate the pattern before cutting, and check after the care cycle.
