Sculpt Fleece Fur Hood Zip Through: A Faux Fur Hood On A Fitted Body

Putting a faux fur hood on a fitted fleece body is joining two things that behave completely differently. The body is a sculpt fleece, which is smooth, stretchy and close fitting. The hood is a pile fabric with real weight and bulk. The join between them is where the garment either looks designed or looks like two garments that met, and on a fitted body there is nowhere to hide a bulky seam.

The weight is the practical problem. A fur hood is heavier than a fleece one, and it hangs from the neckline, so it pulls back harder and it puts more load on the zip and on the neck seam. That is why the hood has to be balanced deliberately and why the neck seam needs more than a normal hoodie seam, and it is worth saying that this garment is heavier to wear than it looks.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The join is the first and it is what decides whether the garment looks right. Faux fur is thick and the sculpt body is smooth and stretchy, so a standard neckline seam will pucker and the hood will sit heavily rather than framing the face. We engineer the seam for the bulk, manage rather than press the thickness, and check the hood on the body rather than on a hanger, because a hood that sits well flat often pulls back once it is worn.

Faux fur behaviour is the second. Fur pile sheds, it mats where it is rubbed, it shades differently by direction, and it is the component most likely to arrive looking wrong after packing. We control pile direction, test shedding and rubbing on the actual cloth, approve the hood after the care cycle rather than only when new, and pack so the pile is not crushed, since arriving flat is the most common complaint about faux fur.

Load, zip and recovery are the third. A fur hood is heavy and hangs from the neckline, which puts real load on the neck seam and on the top of the zip, so both are reinforced rather than standard. The zip has to run through a stretch body without waving, so the placket is stabilised. Recovery in the sculpt body matters because a fitted garment that loses recovery is finished, so we specify the elastane and test recovery after repeated wearing and washing.
