Raglan Hoodie: Why The Sleeve Seam Is The One To Watch

A raglan sleeve is a good trade. You give up the shoulder seam, which means one less seam to fail and a sleeve that is comfortable across a wider range of shoulders, and you get in exchange a diagonal seam running from the neck to the underarm. That diagonal seam is the one to watch, because it crosses the fabric at an angle rather than along it, which means it will wave if the tension is not controlled.

The other reason raglan is worth choosing is fit tolerance. Without a shoulder seam, the sleeve sits where the body puts it rather than where the pattern insists, so a raglan is more forgiving across sizes and slightly easier to sell online. On a hoodie, which is a relaxed garment anyway, that is worth having.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The raglan seam is the first and it is the specific fault of this sleeve. A diagonal seam on a fleece that moves will wave if the tension is wrong, and unlike a shoulder seam it runs across the chest where it is clearly visible. We control the tension, specify the seam type rather than leaving it to the line, and check the sleeve on the body in movement rather than only on a hanger, because a wave that is invisible flat shows immediately when an arm moves.

The hood and the rib are the second. A hood has weight and is attached along the neckline only, so it pulls back unless it is balanced, and that is worse on a heavier fleece. Rib at cuff and hem has to recover after washing or the garment loses its shape, so we specify rib by composition and knitting rather than by colour and test recovery over repeated cycles rather than only when new.

Shrinkage, distortion and surface are the third. A diagonal seam has more directions to shrink in than a straight one, so a raglan can distort through the sleeve if shrinkage is not controlled, which shows as a sleeve that pulls or twists. We test on the actual cloth and compensate the pattern before cutting. On the surface, the brushed face is where pilling shows first, so we test rubbing on the actual cloth and check batch to batch shade.
