Plush Half Zip Sweatshirt: A Short Zip On A Thick Fabric

A half zip in plush is harder than the same style in a flat fleece, and the reason is bulk. Plush is thick and it pushes back, which means a short zip sewn into it has to fight more material than usual, and the placket, which is the part that has to lie flat, is exactly where that bulk collects. The result if it is not handled is a placket that waves, a collar that sits forward, and a zip line that is not straight.

The collar is the second half. A half zip needs a collar that closes neatly at the top and sits well when it is open, and on plush the collar has to be drafted for the thickness of the cloth rather than cut as though it were flat. That is the difference between a collar that looks designed and one that looks like it was added afterwards.

• Placket stabilisation, so the zip line is straight
• Bulk management at the placket seam, rather than pressing it flat
• Zip gauge and length, chosen for a thick cloth
• Collar drafted for the fabric thickness, and how it closes

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The placket is the first and it is where this garment fails. A short zip in a thick, springy cloth will wave unless it is stabilised, and the plush bulk at the seam makes it worse, because pressing it flat is not the same as engineering it flat. We stabilise the placket, manage the bulk at the seam rather than forcing it, specify the zip gauge for the cloth, and check the garment done up and open, on the body rather than flat.

The collar is the second. A collar on plush has to be drafted for the thickness of the fabric or it will be tight, bulky and sit forward, and it has to close neatly at the top without gaping. We develop the collar on the actual cloth, specify any interlining rather than assuming, and check it after the care cycle, because a collar that collapses after washing is a common failure on thick fabrics.

Pile, shrinkage and surface are the third. Pile shades differently by direction, so we control it at cutting, and it flattens and mats where it is handled, which at a placket and collar is exactly where hands go, so we test rubbing and pack so the pile is protected. Shrinkage distorts a placket and tightens a collar faster than it changes a body measurement, so we test on the actual cloth and compensate the pattern before cutting.
